COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Michigan State Police will host a community basketball event in Marquette on July 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Northern Michigan University — the event will have food, music, games and fun for the whole family.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Residents can join an afternoon soiree at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of Marquette—music by Debbie Carlson, Anne Perket and Lynne Koski Lanczy will be presented, and a $10 donation at the door will support the restoration of the historic Austin Organ with a light reception to follow.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superior Central Schools is replacing outdated science lab classrooms in the middle and high school and updating elementary floors this summer—overhauling gas fixtures, water, cabinetry and flooring. The work will use funds from the sinking fund rolled over from last year while the school continues fundraising for its playground project.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A U.P. church in Marquette set up an art installation on East Ridge Street with white crosses that list species extinct since 2020 to mark Endangered Species Day. The display, which includes a prayer bowl and instructions for visitors to participate, remains on view until Sunday—providing a space for shared reflection—and offers a time to remember lost wildlife.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marquette Downtown Development Authority is preparing for summer by planning the return of the Downtown Marquette Farmer’s Market—running from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. this Saturday at the Marquette Commons—and updating plans for the Blueberry Festival plus an expanded Music on Third series.  Sunny 101.9
  • Starting in June, Negaunee Township will deliver new 64-gallon red trash carts that match the recycling bins to improve safety for collectors by using trucks with side arms for pickup — supervisor Gary Wommer said that once residents receive the new carts, only these will be collected.  Upper Michigan's Source
