  • Last Wednesday, 75 veterans and their guardians took off from Delta County Airport on U.P. Honor Flight Mission XXV to tour Washington, D.C.'s war memorials—visiting monuments from World War II to Vietnam—before returning to the Van Rooy Hangar in Escanaba.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette resident Anna Abdo honored her late father, Vietnam veteran + Rev. Micheal Laakko, by carrying a large portrait of him to memorials during U.P. Honor Flight Mission XXV in Washington, D.C. on May 7th after he passed away on April 11th, and she said he always looked forward to honoring his wartime comrades and supporting the community.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Carmen Frank, the U.P. Michigan Works Business Services Specialist, appeared on TV6 Wednesday morning to explain how local businesses benefited from training services — including on-the-job training and the Incumbent Worker Training Program. CRIME NEWS

  • A trooper saw a white man riding a black racing ATV in Ishpeming at about 5:40 p.m. May 9 who sped away when dirt and rocks flew up and police now ask the public for information (the man wore a black shirt and a blue motocross-style helmet without goggles).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A Negaunee High School senior, 18-year-old Carsen Belanger, was arrested on April 17 in a school parking lot and is charged with eight felonies after he is accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman last July & his preliminary exam is scheduled for May 28 at 9:30 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State authorities found that Marquette Area Public Schools need $100 million in improvements for their 750,000 square feet of facilities — some of which are 30 years old. Superintendent Zack Sedgwick said the district will propose a bond for extra funding with a finalized plan by May 2026 — the district currently levies less than 1.5 mills on property tax and will only ask taxpayers for needed funds.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Forsyth Township EMS will host an open house on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—the event will highlight EMS crews, equipment from local departments, and community-donated gifts to thank first responders.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Christine Stryker will leave her job as chief nursing officer and chief operating officer at UP Health System—Marquette to become chief nursing officer at Conemaugh Health System; her last day is Friday, May 23. Meg McConnell, who has served as assistant CNO since 2023, has been named as the new chief nursing officer to ensure a smooth transition.  The Mining Journal
