COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Travel Marquette has launched the BARK Ranger program that gives dog owners a free bandana when they pledge to leave no trace and follow pet etiquette (bagging waste, keeping dogs leashed and on approved trails). The bandana can be picked up at the Travel Marquette office or local hotels (available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Maritime Museum opened for its season yesterday, showing historic displays and tours that share the city’s maritime past (with lighthouse tours at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.). The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and its first paranormal lighthouse tour is set for May 23rd.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators in Marquette are urging parents to enroll 4-year-olds in free pre-k programs for the 2025-26 school year. The state’s Pre-k for All initiative offers full-day, half-day, four-day and five-day options — it includes the Great Start Readiness Program, Head Start and developmental kindergarten programs.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today at 6 p.m., Superior Wildlife Rehab and Education Center at MooseWood Nature Center will host a slide show on its work caring for injured and orphaned wildlife, including fawns and small mammals. The event is open to all ages — donations are welcomed to support ongoing efforts.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette City Engineer Mikael Kilpela said the shoreline restoration project began in August to restore Lakeshore Boulevard between Hawley Street and Pine Street by building a revetment to prevent erosion and add a coastal habitat, walking paths, and a boardwalk overlook (using cobble-sized stone for a natural look). The city manager said the project will be completed by fall.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marquette will host the 3rd annual Nick’s Run for Recovery on Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at the Bell Tower in Lower Harbor Park to raise funds for two recovery homes in Marquette and Ishpeming, honoring Nick Suardini who lost his life to substance abuse—registration begins at 9 a.m. at Elizabeth’s Chop House and the event will offer a door prize, a 50/50 raffle, and a t-shirt for participants.  Upper Michigan's Source
