- ➤ The Ishpeming Lions Club will host its second annual fruit & nut tree giveaway and planting demonstration at Partridge Creek Community Farm Site from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, where up to 120 trees will be available for community members to plant after a hands-on demonstration. - ➤ The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market will operate this Saturday, May 16 at Marquette Commons from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the Wednesday Night Market launches in early June on West Washington Street, offering fresh produce, locally made goods, food, and drink+ art. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Two new swing set structures were installed at Giant’s Foot Park this spring using a $7,000 matching grant from Marquette Rotary District 6220 + Rotary International in collaboration with the city, with Club President Chuck Blaksmith noting local fundraisers drove the project and future community improvements are planned. - ➤ Culver’s in Marquette Township is under new ownership by Steven and Rachel Lawrence and is being updated with an expanded kitchen + double drive-thru system. The restaurant is hiring staff and will reopen Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Upper Michigan's Source
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Marquette Maritime Museum opened for the season Tuesday — thanks to a grant from America250 Michigan that funded three interactive kiosks for historical photos and shipwreck info. Lighthouse tours have begun this month and the museum will host a Free for Locals Day on July 2nd. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette Rockestra will perform its all-ages benefit concert, 'The Songs of 1976,' at Forest Roberts Theatre at NMU at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, to raise funds for a new scholarship fund and the CAAM Emergency Food Program; tickets are available at the door + through NMU outlets. Sunny 101.9

- ➤ Gas prices in Michigan fell 14.8 cents per gallon over the past week and averaged $4.70 today, according to GasBuddy’s survey (4,913 stations). Local prices ranged from $4.22 to $6.09 per gallon with a gap of $1.87. The Mining Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the DNR announced that snowmobile trail permit fees will rise from $52 to $65 with a five-year CPI adjustment to support local clubs that groom trails and repair culverts and bridges in Upper Michigan. Permits go on sale Sept. 1 and are valid from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. Upper Michigan's Source
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Marquette County Health Department warned residents to be cautious with kratom derivatives after a recent overdose death, noting the extracts can be up to 13 times stronger than morphine (and they may interfere with medications). The department also reminded the public that free naloxone is available at its local offices. Upper Michigan's Source
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ NMU women’s soccer has announced its 2026 schedule for pre-season, nonconference, and conference games in Marquette, with pre-season matches in Wisconsin on Aug. 20 and 22 and the regular season starting on Aug. 28; the GLIAC Tournament will begin on Nov. 3. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Head coach Dave Shyiak and NMU hockey revealed the 2026-27 season schedule today; the Wildcats open at home against Miami University on Oct. 2 and 3 and will host January games at Berry Events Center, with playoffs and a Milwaukee tournament set later and additional dates to be confirmed. - ➤ NMU men’s soccer released its 2026 schedule featuring preseason exhibitions beginning Thursday, Aug. 13, nonconference and GLIAC games, and postseason play starting Oct. 31.
