COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Marquette Elks Lodge donated $2,000 to JJ Packs to provide weekend meals for school children. Elks Chaplain Richard Handrahan and JJ Packs co-director Kristin Marchiol were at the donation event. The Mining Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Marquette was established when local pioneers built a port to ship iron ore and spark the mining industry. The town, once called Worcester, was later renamed to honor a Jesuit priest and mark its roots in commerce and community values. The Mining Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bay College honored Dr. Thad Strom with its 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award during an April celebration in Escanaba and named him guest speaker for the 2027 commencement ceremony. The award recognizes his nearly 20 years advancing veterans’ healthcare and local leadership (the college lauded his commitment). The Mining Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A striking sunrise over Presque Isle Point Rocks (White Rocks) was captured last Friday by Ron Mattson, highlighting a serene and scenic start to the day in our community. The Mining Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ NMU Hockey Camp 2026 is set for Monday through Friday, Aug. 10-14 at the Berry Events Center, where youth will receive daily on-ice instruction and off-ice training from Wildcats coaches and players. Campers will pay $500 plus a $25 fee and must register one week before the camp starts. The Mining Journal
- ➤ At Negaunee High School on Friday, Marquette boys broke records and won multiple events while Negaunee girls secured the team title at the Negaunee Lions Invitational (where personal bests were achieved). Today at 3:30 p.m. Marquette Senior High School will host the County Meet with teams including the Sentinels and Negaunee. The Mining Journal
