COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to hold a Mobile Food Pantry drive-through event on Thursday, May 14 at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey. Food will be available for about 600 families from 10 a.m. until supplies run out or 11:30 a.m. (please have trunk space ready).  The Mining Journal
  • U.P. Rowing, a local volunteer club, is hosting a Meet and Greet Monday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Ore Dock Brewing Company (114 West Spring Street) to introduce adults over 18 to group rowing, specialized training, and safety tips.  Sunny 101.9

  • At Ore Dock Brewing Co., a panel co-hosted by Range Bank & Kendrick’s Bordeau offered local business owners guidance on succession planning and retirement. The discussion emphasized talking with family and planning ahead to ensure clear business transfer and avoid conflicts.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Symphony Orchestra is hosting its Young Artist Competition for string instrument players open to U.S. applicants aged 30 or younger, and the winner will perform a solo at an April 10 concert next year plus receive a $1,000 cash prize that supports community outreach and portfolio building.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Regional History Center will start its 90-minute history bus tours on July 15, guiding riders to key city landmarks with narration and costumed characters. Tours will run in the afternoon and evening throughout July and August (tickets are available online).  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Construction Connect U.P. graduates signed apprenticeship agreements that blend classroom training with paid work on local job sites. The initiative, run in collaboration with UPCC, UP Michigan Works + local unions, is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled trades workers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Excellence in Education Week honored sponsors boosting student achievement and educator performance in Marquette and Alger counties. Representatives from Upper Peninsula Health Plan (Melissa Holmquist), Upper Peninsula Power Company (Lisa and Crystal LaFreniere), and Anderson Tackman and Company (Michael Grentz) received recognition as part of Grow and Lead’s youth support.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Recycle 906 and the Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority provided spring cleaning tips on proper recycling and trash disposal; Josh Wales explained which items require special handling + suggested guidelines for larger cleanup projects.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has added two Fire Boss aircraft capable of scooping 800 gallons of water in 15 seconds to its firefighting fleet for the spring season; based at Gaylord Regional Airport, the planes recently helped control a fire near Mio.  The Mining Journal
  • Governor Whitmer ordered U.S. and Michigan flags lowered at the Capitol as memorial services were held Friday at NMU in Marquette to honor longtime public servant Steve Adamini, who served in the state legislature and supported local veterans. Funeral services occurred at NMU’s Northern Center with burial at Park Cemetery.  WZMQ 19
  • The We Energies Foundation announced a $150K grant to help first responders acquire lifesaving equipment and training through its Rewarding Responders program; eligible agencies in the U.P. and Wisconsin can apply online until June 15.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marquette County’s Life Tracker program gives transmitter wristbands to families with loved ones facing memory issues so that authorities can quickly locate a wandering person upon a 911 call. Volunteers from RSVP & Aging Services help maintain the devices and enroll clients free of charge, reducing average rescue times to under 30 minutes.  The Mining Journal
  • IMPART Alliance+AgeAlive is expanding a statewide caregiving initiative by launching Healing Art Garden installations that honor caregivers and support mental health. Three events are set starting May 12 at Escanaba Public Library from 2–4 p.m., May 13 at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Baraga from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and May 14 at Trillium House in Marquette from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Mining Journal
