COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NTN crews and volunteers cleaned Forestville Trails on Thursday to remove winter debris ahead of the summer season. The 150-mile trail network needs more cleaning before events begin, and local residents may volunteer (details on the NTN website).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Oberstar Inc. is restoring a concrete crosswalk at the Lakeshore Boulevard intersection, so East Washington Street from Front Street to Lakeshore will be closed until Monday morning, May 11. Pedestrians may use the north sidewalk and eastbound vehicles will follow a detour along Front, Main and Lakeshore Boulevard.  The Mining Journal

  • More than 100 business leaders gathered at the InvestUP CEO Summit in Marquette Thursday, where CEO Marty Fittante received a $1.4 million check from the Kobasic Foundation for the ISD Homebuilding Partnership. Neel Kashkari offered economic insights as summit discussions focused on funding and housing challenges.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari met with local business leaders in Marquette today during the Invest U.P. CEO conference (a regional forum on business trends) and answered questions on interest rates, local growth and development.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More Michigan students join career and technical education programs as demand for skilled trades grows, and local schools are planning to upgrade their learning spaces (including CTE and STEM programs) through a nearly $60 million bond proposal at Marquette Senior High School and Bothwell Middle School.  The Mining Journal
  • Students from the Keweenaw Peninsula earned two top awards at the Invention Convention Michigan held at The Henry Ford Museum and will compete at the Invention Convention Nationals in June. Adelyn Wilson and Allie Johnston impressed judges with their invention Magic Footsteps (a tool for improving basketball layup techniques).  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources published its annual Forest Health Highlights report that shows last year's ice storm and pest outbreaks weakened state-managed forests, and staff will continue treatments and surveys on affected acres in northern Michigan.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The State Capitol Complex will lower the U.S. & state flags to half-staff today to honor former representative Steve Adamini, a Marquette native who served in key leadership roles. The flags will be raised back to full staff Saturday, May 9.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jen Krzewina said the U.P. Wellness Task Force meets every 90 days to discuss topics such as teacher wellness, various therapies & suicide prevention. The group will hold its next session on Thursday, May 28 at the Marquette-Alger RESA offices, and community members are invited to register online.  Sunny 101.9
  • UP Health System Marquette has added Christopher Omerza, MD, to its surgical team. Dr. Omerza specializes in general surgery (including robotic and minimally invasive procedures) and brings local expertise to the hospital.  The Mining Journal
  • On May 7, the Superior Health Foundation provided ongoing grant support to U.P. Children's Therapy to help families cover gaps in speech, communication, and functional skills.   • Queen City Running hosts the Little Carp 1 Mile Run today at South Beach, starting at 6 p.m. + finishing at 6:30 p.m., and the Dead Carp races on Saturday from Ojibway Casino to Mattson Lower Harbor Park finish by 11:15 a.m.; city streets remain open so drive carefully.  The Mining Journal
