COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seventy-five Vietnam veterans from UP, who visited Washington, D.C. to see war memorials, will return today at 8 p.m. at the Van Roy Hangar at Delta County Airport—doors open at 6:30 p.m.—after a once-in-a-lifetime journey.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival will return to Marquette this July with a lineup that includes Tony Trischka, WhoDat Brass, and the Scottish band Breabach—tickets will go on sale starting Tuesday, May 20 at 9 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Young students from elementary schools across the county are displaying their paintings, drawings, collages, and sculptures in the Annual Children’s Exhibition at the DeVos Art Museum. The gallery is open until May 24 and a reception is held May 22—from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan House of Representatives passed two bills Tuesday that will let 13 U.P. RICE generators operate until 2049—avoiding early shutdown under clean energy rules. The Senate now must approve the bills before they head to Governor Whitmer for review.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Michigan now mandates lead blood testing for children at 12 months, 24 months, or by 72 months if untested, with rules that went into effect late April to detect early lead exposure. Health officials say the new law helps catch exposure before long-term problems develop — parents may opt out of the mandatory testing if they choose.  Upper Michigan's Source
