COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ NMORC will host a simulation event on May 21 at Marquette-Alger RESA building, 321 E. Ohio St in Marquette that shows obstacles faced after incarceration. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers roles as Volunteers or role players + seating is limited. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ United Way of Marquette is hosting the Stamp Out Hunger drive on Saturday, May 9. Residents can drop nonperishable items at their mailbox to support local food pantries such as Janzen House; canned goods + dried foods are recommended. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Community leaders, developers and officials gathered Wednesday at the Central U.P. Housing Solutions Summit organized by Marquette County Housing Now to share crucial data and ideas for addressing the local housing shortage. - ➤ Volunteers with MDOT's Adopt-A-Highway program will clean state roadsides across the Upper Peninsula and parts of the northern Lower Peninsula on Saturday, May 17 as part of the annual spring litter pickup - groups must include at least three members, and MDOT supplies free safety vests and trash bags. - ➤ The Feeding America Mobile Food Truck will serve meals today from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at North Iron Church in Ishpeming. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Business leaders attended InvestUP's CEO dinner at the Jacobetti Center on NMU’s campus yesterday & saw a surprise Enstrom helicopter landing as a preview to Thursday’s CEO Summit starting at 10 a.m. today. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Range Bank is hosting a business succession seminar on Friday at Ore Dock Brewing Company from 2 to 3 p.m. The workshop will help local business owners plan retirement transfers to family members or other entrepreneurs, said Amanda Knaffla, the bank's chief trust and wealth manager. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Peter White Public Library will launch its summer reading program on June 6 – children and teens can earn prizes for reading as events are planned in June and July to help families keep up with reading during the summer. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette voters approved a $60 million bond proposal for MAPS Tuesday night, which funds upgrades in all district facilities. Forty percent of the funds will renovate Bothwell Middle School with a new addition to allow construction during school, with work scheduled to begin summer 2027. Upper Michigan's Source
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources found lake trout that appear underweight, dubbed zombie fish, during deep-water surveys in Lake Superior near Pictured Rocks. The team will assess the fish’s health in June to determine if a lack of food, disease or toxins is to blame. The Mining Journal
