COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trail Administrator Bob Hendrickson appeared on Sunny 101.9 studios today to update on Iron Ore Heritage Trail conditions, saying heavy snow, quick melt and flooding caused some damage but the trail is less impacted than expected (users should exercise caution as snow remains in parts of the trail).  Sunny 101.9
  • Travel Marquette is offering a Brew Pass until Sept. 13 that lets residents and tourists check in at local breweries for prizes. Two check-ins win a locally designed card deck while five check-ins yield a heavy-duty blanket, and CEO Susan Estler says it brings a fun boost to local business.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee is hosting its 48th Annual Spring Clean-Up from today until May 15 to clear trash and rejuvenate local areas, and Chair Lisa Jahnke said the effort helps neighbors get outdoors after winter.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • A three-day vinyl show will be held at the Landmark Inn’s Sky Room at 230 N. Front St. from 5 p.m. to midnight on May 29 & 30 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 31. The free event features records, CDs, cassettes, posters, books and t-shirts.  The Mining Journal
  • Zero Degrees Art Gallery is showcasing Kate Oman's work as its May Guest Artist until the end of May at 525 N. Third St. in Marquette, with a free public reception Saturday from 1-4 p.m. (free admission) and light refreshments available.  The Mining Journal
  • The Peter White Public Library hosted a Star Wars celebration Monday, May 4, where many costumed guests enjoyed crafts, books, and a screening of A New Hope to learn about library resources — adding a creative twist to local culture in Marquette.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette County students kick off the 51st Annual Marquette Alger Young Authors Conference Monday for a four-day event that boosts literacy for nearly 3,000 pre-K to fifth grade attendees. Guest authors will guide them in improving writing skills at local sessions.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tai Chi and Qi Gong workshop will be led by Jon and Diana Magnuson at Morgan Chapel, St. Paul's Episcopal Church this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in Marquette — the $25 fee includes a light brunch and supports Cedar Tree Institute’s cedar tree planting initiative.  The Mining Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Range Bank is hosting two scam prevention workshops in May to teach residents how phishing + spoofing scams work and ways to protect themselves. The first workshop is tomorrow at the Negaunee Senior Center and another will be held on May 12 at the Marquette Township Community Center.  Upper Michigan's Source

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Central U.P. Housing Solutions Summit will be held Wednesday, May 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Northern Center at NMU in Marquette - the event invites community members to share ideas and data on boosting attainable housing, and registration is required.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Registration for South Shore Fishing Association’s Spring Shootout will open Friday at the Elks Lodge in Marquette from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The fishing tournament, charging $150 per boat and featuring all trout + salmon categories, will begin Saturday morning.  Upper Michigan's Source
