  • Outdoor enthusiasts enjoyed the newly opened Presque Isle Loop on Sunday. Locals and visitors found the scenic route peaceful and are encouraged to drive slowly — ensuring everyone remains safe as traffic increases with warmer weather.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Airlines has revised its Chicago O’Hare to Marquette flight service launch to Oct. 25 because current FAA capacity restrictions require a delay - passengers with reservations can rebook or obtain refunds.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Piano students of Robert Buchkoe will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. The free event features a variety of musical styles and ages, and more information is available by calling (906-226-7273).  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dementia Caregiving Series, an online program for caregivers, will run from 2-3 p.m. (Eastern) on Wednesdays, June 10, 17 and 24 via Zoom. Registration is free until June 1 through 2-1-1 or by visiting the program website.  The Mining Journal
  • MDOT has opened the Paint the Plow program for Michigan middle and high schools (theme: 'See snow? Go slow!') to design art that promotes safe winter driving; applications are accepted through Friday, May 29 with winners notified in early June and plow blades showcased along state routes this winter.  The Mining Journal
  • Bay College + NMU have partnered to launch a new 3+1 transfer pathway that lets students earn a bachelor’s in early childhood education by completing online coursework and local student teaching, with an option for a birth-to-kindergarten teaching certificate. The program offers flexible, cost-efficient access for educators to advance their skills.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The West End Health Foundation opened its Proactive Grant funding window on May 1, inviting nonprofits to apply online for food security programs in the West End until noon on June 1 with awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last week, Negaunee High School JV baseball teams won three games at Irontown Field with double-digit runs in each contest. They beat Escanaba on Tuesday with scores of 20-10 and 13-1 before defeating visiting Marquette 14-6 on Thursday.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette senior Ford Richardson and Westwood’s Ethan Marta were named top players in BCAM Best teams by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan following their winter matchups; Richardson (Division 1) and Marta (Division 3) earned state honors in high school basketball.  The Mining Journal
  • Northern Michigan University lacrosse won its GLIAC semifinal with a 15 to 7 victory over Concordia-St. Paul on Friday evening — they will face Grand Valley State for the tournament title, marking their fourth straight year reaching the final.  The Mining Journal
