Dozens gathered at Marquette Commons this afternoon for the Workers over Billionaires rally, a nationwide May Day event supporting working families and public schools; organizers from Upper Peninsula Regional Labor Federation + Lake Superior Region Indivisible said the rally aimed to boost local voices on unions and public services.

Mount Manufacturing will expand into the former Best Buy space in Marquette Township to support its growth — Cherry Creek Construction will take over its current building to expand services and reenergize local commercial space.

The moves will boost the Greater Marquette business scene.

Area high school girls basketball players received BCAM Best honors announced by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, with seven local players from Negaunee, Ishpeming, Baraga and Munising named, including standout seniors and one noteworthy freshman—recognizing both athletic performance and academics. NMU Women finished third in the GLIAC Outdoor Championships on Friday at Grand Valley State with 113 points, and field athlete Danielle Lund won the discus with a 42.97m toss — earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors and contributing to eight podium finishes overall.

The Negaunee High School girls track team dominated the Flivver Invitational in Kingsford on Thursday, scoring 191 points while competitors totaled 150.

They will compete in the WIN meet on Tuesday in Negaunee — a promising next step for local athletes.

GLIAC announced NMU’s 2026 Women’s Lacrosse Postseason honors by naming Josie Lakosky as Offensive Player of the Year for the second time & awarding Avery Lorinser First Team honors.

Other Wildcats earned Second Team and Honorable Mention nods during conference play.
