COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for the Made UP Outdoor Summit on May 28 and 29 in Marquette & 906 Adventure Team Director Todd Poquette says the event will feature local speakers who will encourage outdoor discussion.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tour Da Yoop, Eh, a 10-day bike race supporting children with cancer, will begin its journey in Manistique on July 24 and loop around the U.P. before returning to the start point. Participants will pay per day to join this community event.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The 69th annual Chicken Barbecue is set for June 14 at Lakeview Arena and will raise funds for local non-profit organizations focused on youth programs. Grant applications close on June 15.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Lake Superior Community Partnership is hosting a housing summit on May 6 at the Northern Center at NMU where over 100 housing advocates and developers will discuss local housing shortages affecting labor supply — attendees pay $35 for breakfast and lunch.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Northern Sky Dance and Fitness is set to perform Peter Pan ballet tomorrow at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette — the production involves over 100 dancers ranging from toddlers to adults, and tickets cost $22 for adults and $17 for NMU students and Youth.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Ray Fuller, an award winning international touring artist, will perform at Ore Dock Brewing Co. on Thursday, May 21; doors open at 6:00 p.m. with a local set by The Delta Duo, and tickets are $10 in advance at Marquette Wallpaper & Paint or $15 at the door.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eighth graders from Holy Name Catholic School held a mock trial at the 47th Circuit Court on Thursday in Escanaba. They played roles as prosecution, defense, witnesses, and bailiff in a case set up by their teacher in partnership with a former attorney (teaching legal skills for future careers).  WZMQ 19
  • At NMU Barnes + Noble bookstore, students are returning textbooks and collecting graduation items as finals wrap up while families visit, and about 1,200 graduates will walk the stage at Superior Dome on Saturday, May 2.  WZMQ 19
  • During National Apprenticeship Week, state leaders report that over 250 active apprentices are training in the Upper Peninsula while a new $4M investment is planned to add more than 600 participants statewide in fields such as construction, health care, and manufacturing — efforts aimed at keeping workers in local communities.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DNR’s research vessel Lake Char will launch soon from Marquette to conduct spring lake trout surveys in Lake Superior. Delays from an April 27 start result from ongoing repairs at the vessel’s storage facility.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state representative and Marquette County Board member Stephen Adamini died Wednesday, Apr. 29 in Upper Michigan. Community leaders praised his public service and pro bono legal work (a lasting legacy for local government).  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Northern Michigan University NCSA Women’s Team qualified for the NCSA Division II World Series after winning the Division Finals in Elkhart, Indiana. The team will depart May 7 for the tournament in Cranberry, Pennsylvania from May 8 to 10 and seeks local support for travel expenses (call 920-450-5680).  The Mining Journal
