COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way hosted a community impact panel Wednesday night where nonprofits pitched projects to be reviewed by committees & a board for funding approvals early summer in Marquette. The event used a Shark Tank–style format to connect community needs with potential support.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tuesday, Workers’ Memorial Day was observed at the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum (Ishpeming) to honor workers killed, injured, or made unwell on the job. Union leaders stressed the need to uphold safety rules so every worker comes home.  The Mining Journal
  • Superiorland Ski Club is hosting a bike and kayak swap this Saturday at Lakeview Arena. Attendees can drop off items from 9 to 10:30 a.m., shop from 11 to 12:30 p.m. and pick up profits at 1 p.m. (cash and checks only) with commissions supporting club activities.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Teams of five will run from Marquette to Big Bay during the Big Bay Relay on May 16 at Kaufman Sports Complex - runners will pass the baton every mile, making it a fun outdoor summer event for friends and family.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Downtown District Authority received a record number of poster submissions and vendor applications for the Blueberry Festival, with voting for poster entries available at the Peter White Public Library until the end of May. The festival will occur on July 31 and feature more than 120 vendors.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Regional History Center will host the 21st Annual Cemetery Walk: World War II Memories on Thursday, May 28, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Pick a self-guided tour at 1 p.m. or a seated tour at 6 p.m. (lawn chairs welcome) with a $5 donation.  The Mining Journal
  • Travel Marquette received a top state award earlier this month at the Pure Michigan Governors Conference on Tourism in Traverse City * the group was honored for its stewardship projects that engage visitors and residents in protecting Marquette County’s outdoor spaces.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have passed a four-year high across Upper Michigan as a midwestern refinery's outage adds to supply problems. Economists say price hikes may push prices near $5 a gallon for several weeks plus locals adjust their travel habits.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Superintendent Glenn Maleyko visited Marquette Wednesday as part of his U.P. tour, meeting with local school officials during a Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators meeting. He listened to educators' concerns about literacy and budget challenges and promised to bring their input back to Lansing to support rural districts.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Senior High School held a career fair that featured over 40 organizations—ranging from colleges to local businesses—to help students explore careers in the U.P. Erich Ziegler said Munising High School will host another career fair on May 7.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marquette is launching a new Climate Action Plan as part of its Community Master Plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions — residents can share their ideas by completing a survey to help shape future city actions.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • OSF HealthCare St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba earned a 5-Star Rating from the National Rural Rating System for the first quarter, reflecting its commitment to high patient satisfaction and community-centered care.
