COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Love and Bicycles in Negaunee is hosting a Q&A event—set for Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—to explain e-bike etiquette, safety tips, and the new city rule allowing only class one e-bikes on multi-use paths, with staff detailing how bikes from the store can be modified to meet the regulation.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local students joined the Civilian Pilot Training program and became known as the U.P. Wildcats when 18 men were inducted into the Navy on February 7th at the Palestra—this live broadcast ceremony marked the start of their World War II service with some members losing their lives. The Marquette Regional History Center is hosting its 20th Annual Cemetery Walk on May 8th to honor these local heroes.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University students will graduate this weekend and are using NMU Career Services for resume help and interview preparation as job openings dropped in March. NMU Career Services Director Katie Korpi said that health care and psychology majors show strong prospects while UP Michigan Works! Talent Services Director Jim Messer added that skilled trades like electricians will offer wage increases of $8 to $12 per hour — prompting graduates to rely on these career resources.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Michigan DNR is issuing fuelwood collection permits that let residents collect up to five cords of wood from dead and downed trees on designated state lands for home heating—this program also clears forest debris to enhance safety.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Presque Isle Park loop opens for vehicle traffic on Friday and will close at 6 p.m. each day until May 15 or until the blue spotted salamander migration ends—drivers must park only in designated spots and obey wildlife rules.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana announced a student loan repayment program offering up to $200,000 to private practice dentists who agree to serve underserved communities — requiring that at least 15% of their patients are on Medicaid. The program aims to ease the dental care shortage in rural areas, particularly in the Upper Peninsula, with applications now open and deadlines approaching.  WZMQ 19
