- ➤ The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 distributes memorial poppies in May to honor fallen service members and support veterans. They will be available May 8-10 at the Mother’s Day Craft Show at the Superior Dome and May 23 at Super One Foods and Tadych’s Marketplace Foods in Marquette. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Queen City Running Co. will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the Dead Carp 10-mile run along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, finishing at Lower Harbor Park + a party at Ore Dock will follow to honor local fitness. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Anton Reinaas, a Marquette Senior High freshman, has launched FindLocal906, an online business directory that is (ad-free) and free for local companies, listing over 100 businesses from Marquette to Houghton and Manistique. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Lake Superior Art Association will mark its 75th Anniversary by showcasing past artworks from around 30 local artists at the Marquette Regional History Center. The exhibition is free, runs May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with free viewing starting May 5 plus refreshments available. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes was elected to the American Association of Community Colleges Board among 19 candidates + six seats for a three-year term beginning July 1. She will represent Bay College and the Upper Peninsula as key decisions for community colleges are made. WZMQ 19
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Isle Royale National Park, Michigan Tech University’s annual survey shows 37 wolves in three packs + a drop in the moose count from 2,000 to 524 with no new calves observed. Researchers expect food scarcity to soon impact both populations. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The DNR closed several state parks because recent flooding damaged trails and railings. Workers are checking park conditions to decide if the parks can reopen soon and warn visitors to avoid flooded areas. Upper Michigan's Source
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched a statewide interactive Gun Lock Distribution Map (listing 150 sites) to help residents find free cable-style gun locks for safe storage. Community partners like local health departments may also request supplies to distribute in their areas. The Mining Journal
- ➤ New elk hunting rules were approved on April 8, setting a first contiguous hunt period from Sept. 23-Oct. 4 and a second from Dec. 1-15; hunters will be able to apply for licenses starting May 1 with drawing results on June 22. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Marquette City Police Captain James Finkbeiner reminded e-bike riders that only Class 1 pedal-assist bikes (not exceeding 20 mph) may use multi-use paths and urged use of bike lanes and proper charging and storage; city commissioners will review E-Bike Task Force recommendations soon.
