COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Marquette County released its 2024 report showing it delivered $1.5M in community aid by working with nonprofits to fight food insecurity. Executive Director Andrew Rickauer said the group partnered with Feeding America West Michigan to help meet local needs by distributing nearly 500,000 meals—strengthening the county's food access.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, April 27, a witness said a head-on collision occurred on M-553 near Airport Road in Sands Township when a 72-year-old Marquette woman driving a 2020 Toyota RAV4 crossed the center line and collided with a 57-year-old Gwinn woman driving a 2011 Ford Fiesta; both drivers were extricated by emergency personnel and treated for non-life-threatening injuries & both vehicles were totaled & authorities ruled out alcohol and speed as factors.  WZMQ 19
  • A 22-year-old Ishpeming man was injured in a rollover crash on County Road 480 near Old 480 Road outside Negaunee around 11:20 a.m. Monday when his pickup truck left the road, hit rocks, and rolled onto its side—authorities suspect alcohol and drugs contributed to the incident.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Forty-seven top high school seniors from Marquette & Alger counties were honored Monday night at the Excellence in Education Program, where each received a $1,500 scholarship for ranking in the top five percent. The event, hosted by Grow and Lead Community Youth Development, also recognized dedicated teachers & community support for their role in the students’ success.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The U.P. Wellness Task Force works to improve mental health access across the U.P. by asking more community members to share their ideas and plan projects, and the group will meet again in about 90 days & more details will be posted on the website.  Upper Michigan's Source
