CULTURE NEWS

  • Daughtry will perform at the U.P. State Fair Grandstand on Friday, Aug. 21, with tickets on sale today and limited Gold Circle seating available online; the event is presented by Island Resort & Casino.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan's average gas price jumped 21.4 cents to $4.01 today, according to GasBuddy's survey (4,913 stations); it is 2.9 cents higher than last month and nearly $1 more than a year ago, while national prices rose 7 cents per gallon.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten scholarships are available for the Young Writers Storytelling Workshop scheduled for May 16 at Peter White Public Library (217 N. Front St.) in Marquette from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The workshop will help young writers develop storytelling skills through guided exercises and an Authors Q&A with local authors.  The Mining Journal
  • Ewen-Trout Creek Schools has proposed a bond to update its aging facilities including carpeting, parking lots, lighting, kitchen equipment, windows and buses, with no mill increase. The district aims to raise $6 million and requests votes on May 5.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Fifty top seniors from schools in Marquette and Alger counties were awarded $2,000 scholarships and 25 teachers received $1,000 professional development grants at Monday evening's Grow & Lead Excellence in Education awards at the Northern Center, recognizing academic achievement and impactful mentorship.  WZMQ 19
  • MSU Extension is hosting Healthy Animals, Strong Farms training to help U.P. livestock farms strengthen biosecurity practices. The free session will run May 5, 4-7 p.m. in Negaunee (184 US 41) with door prizes and giveaways for participants.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System published its annual Community Benefit Report for 2025, detailing over $10 million in capital improvements across its Marquette, Ishpeming and Hancock locations, a payroll of more than $250 million with 2,655 employees and over $50 million donated in health services to the Upper Michigan community.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched an online map showing 150 locations where residents can pick up free cable-style gun locks. Marquette residents can use the tool to locate nearby MSP posts or health offices for safe firearm storage.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Marquette Senior High softball team won the Laker Invitational at Glen Lake High School in Maple City on Saturday by defeating Norway 11-0 and Glen Lake 20-11 + they will play a home doubleheader against Westwood at 4:30 p.m. today and a road game at Sault Ste.
