- ➤ On Saturday, the Marquette Farmers Market held its preview market and the weekly market will begin May 16th for locals to buy fresh produce. The Mining Journal
- ➤ UP Family Doula Care held a car seat safety event on Sunday at the Negaunee MSP, where families learned to check proper installation and updated regulations after the law changed. Local residents gained expert guidance to better secure their children when driving. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The lake freighter Lee A. Tregurtha, a World War II veteran admired by local boat watchers, docked Sunday morning at Upper Harbor's ore dock (Presque Isle) and its storied past continues to draw interest. The Mining Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Northern Michigan University updated its heritage center website in 2019 to include 'The Seventh Fire' — a timeline that uses indigenous oral history and archival records to trace early Anishinaabe migrations, missions, and colonial encounters in the UP and shows how indigenous culture shaped local history. - ➤ Native American community members gathered Saturday at Ojibwe Casino for the Marquette Ziigwan Powwow, which featured two grand dance openings, vendor booths, and a free feast, drawing hundreds from across the Upper Peninsula (including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Canada and downstate). - ➤ On April 21, NMU’s Director of Choral Activities, Erin Colwitz, led 28 Arts Chorale and 99 Choral Society singers in a Masterwork Festival Chorus performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City — the group performed Mozart’s Coronation Mass with professional musicians. - ➤ Marquette Rockestra will perform 1976 hits on Saturday, May 16 at Forest Roberts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. and raise funds for Community Action Alger Marquette’s Emergency Food Program and a MAPS arts scholarship, with advance tickets at $20 for adults + $10 for NMU students and youth. - ➤ Northern Michigan University instructor Hans Otto will present a brief natural history of bats — covering research methods and white-nose syndrome — at MooseWood Nature Center in Marquette on Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m. The Mining Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The NMU women’s lacrosse team won 15-7 at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday and now prepares for the GLIAC semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Allendale (they are seeded second), while league leader Grand Valley State hosts Davenport at 4:30 p.m. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Registration is open for summer tennis programs at Marquette Senior High School Tennis Courts (space limited) with sessions led by Josh Kitto and local coaches. The 10U Academy meets Tuesdays from June 16 to July 14 and junior tennis runs Thursdays from June 18 to July 16. The Mining Journal
- ➤ NMU’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are hosting youth (3-on-3) and adult (5-on-5) tournaments at NMU Soccer Fields on Wright Street from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday, July 12. Registration ends at 4 p.m. EDT on Wed, July 1. The Mining Journal
