  • Today, Bromley’s Books opened its new storefront at 813 North Third Street in Marquette—marking its debut brick-and-mortar location after years with the Book Bus. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, over 100 high school CTE students tested their skills in TIG welding, MIG welding, and playhouse construction at the U.P. Construction and Welding Skills Challenge hosted at the Union Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Training Center in Negaunee Township. Manistique High School Senior Samuel Lemaster—last year’s winners—hopes these challenges help build careers that keep talent in the U.P.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Over 100 CTE students competed on Friday at the Union Carpenters and Millwrights Training Center in Negaunee to showcase their construction and welding skills — building a pre-designed structure and completing precision welding tasks — as part of the annual U.P. Construction & Welding Skills Challenge. The event, organized by the U.P. Construction Council, awarded top teams while first place earned a plaque on the U.P. Construction Skills trophy.  WZMQ 19

  • NMU ended Anderton’s Earth Week on Friday with a Water is Life festival that brought indigenous teachers, musicians, and student groups to a walk from the Superior Dome to Dead River and a panel at Jamrich Hall. The event also featured water-themed performances at Hedgcock atrium—organizers said the celebration showed how Lake Superior shapes everyday life— and set the stage for future community efforts.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette residents and NMU students gathered for the first-ever Water is Life Festival on Friday with a lakeshore walk, panel discussion on water issues, and interactive Earth Week displays. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the House Health Policy Committee discussed a bill that would let Michigan join the Nurse Licensure Compact—allowing nurses to work across state lines with one license; proponents say the move will help bring more nurses to the U.P., while opponents worry about lower standards.
