COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food pantries in the Upper Peninsula can apply for a grant offering refrigeration units worth up to $7,000 from the United Dairy Industry of Michigan in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Superior Health Foundation. Applications are due by June 22.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday morning, students from 7 school districts showcased their construction and welding skills at the Carpenters & Millwrights Training Center in NeGaunee; 54 welding students were tested on various techniques and winning teams received a trophy and a banner for their CTE classrooms.  WZMQ 19
  • Students at North Star Montessori listened as motivational speaker Brad Hurtig recounted overcoming adversity after losing his hands in an accident. He shared his story to help students not give up while he has been featured on ESPN and the New York Times.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU Choir students have returned from New York City after performing at Carnegie Hall with guidance from Director Erin Colwitz. They will host concerts today and Sunday, Apr. 26 in Marquette (tickets are available on the NMU events website).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • MDHHS has launched a grant for schools and nonprofits to create peer-to-peer anti-bullying programs for special needs students using the Statewide Autism model; applications are due by 3 p.m. Friday, May 22 (conference at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday) and $150,000 will support 30–35 awards from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NMU's 12th annual Anderton’s Earth Week concludes this weekend in Marquette with a birding walk and cleanup happening today and a Stuff Swap on Sunday (record attendance noted so far) that shows strong local support for our environment.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The city has released a Climate Action Survey for all residents as part of building its citywide Climate Action Plan. It will remain open until May 31 and paper copies are available at the Community Development Office (1100 Wright St).  The Mining Journal
  • NMU WellBeing hosted Toolkit Tuesday in Jamrich on Tuesday, Apr. 21 to promote environmental awareness and sustainable living while highlighting Marquette's *4Rs: reuse, reduce, recycle and rethink* and encouraging students to review their everyday habits and campus resources for sustainability.  The North Wind

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System–Marquette has welcomed Neil Umles, MD, to its Medical Specialists nephrology team. He will provide care for patients with kidney disease + work with colleagues to improve kidney health using his advanced transplant training.  The Mining Journal

  • Select NMU women’s track athletes join teammates in Wisconsin for the St. Norbert Invitational in De Pere today, with field events at 10:30 a.m. EDT & track events at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
