COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 170 U.P. women veterans will depart Delta County Airport on May 21 for the largest all-female Honor Flight in the nation, with a new service sister pairing system replacing guardians. Volunteers have provided quilt donations in red, white and blue—over 40 of which will be displayed in Manistique as the flight visits the Military Women’s Memorial.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette thrift shops including Goodwill, Salvation Army, Silver Creek Thrift and Pak Ratz are hosting Thrift Hop today—shoppers receive punch cards when they visit all four stores to enter to win gift cards and prizes—with each store offering sales and special deals all day.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Marquette Choral Society will perform its spring concert, Rejoice: Celebrating Spring, at Reynolds Recital Hall on Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. & on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m., with tickets available online or at the door.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gwinn High School's Quiz Bowl team finished a 32-0 season after winning the state championship on April 12 at Michigan State University and will compete in the national championship in Chicago this weekend — marking a historic first for the school.  WZMQ 19
  • North Star Montessori Academy hosted its second annual Career Day on Thursday where over 15 professionals explained jobs such as mechanic, engineer, police officer, and reporter—showing students the work opportunities available in the U.P. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In April, the House Committee approved the Livestock and Pet Protection Act that lets states manage Michigan's gray wolf population if it is removed from the Federal Endangered Species list. DNR biologist Brian Roell said the wolves recovered naturally after federal protection began — even after past bounties — and plans are in place to keep them off the list if the bill passes.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Ishpeming City Council directed the city manager to request $1.5 million from the state’s general fund—$600k for restoring the historic fire tower and $900k for a new firetruck, projects that have been on the radar for years.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Public health officials and doctors warn that children must have up-to-date vaccines as measles and whooping cough cases rise, with nearly 700 pertussis cases statewide this year. Marquette County has seen no measles cases in five years but recorded 24 whooping cough cases in 2025—experts say low vaccination rates put infants at risk.  The Mining Journal
