COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ishpeming will honor Workers Memorial Day on Tuesday, April 28 at the Cliff Shaft Mine Museum (501 W. Euclid St.) from noon to 3 p.m. to remember lost workers and mark the anniversaries of OSHA, NIOSH, and MSHA while commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Barns Heckler Mining Disaster.  The Mining Journal
  • Anchor Church is hosting its Open Drawer offering free infant, toddler, women’s and a large selection of men’s clothing + shoes. The donation event runs Thursday, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m.-noon, and Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Masonic Building in downtown Marquette.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Farmers Market preview is scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Marquette Commons — new and recurring vendors will show their products while market members pick up early access pins ahead of the season starting May 16.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette County is hosting the City Nature Challenge from today until Monday. Organized by NMU’s Biology department, the event invites residents and high school students to log species observations on iNaturalist during scheduled walks at Harlow Lake and Wetmore Landing.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • HR professionals and business leaders met at NMU on Thursday for the annual Spring Summit, where sessions focused on legal issues and building workplace culture. The event featured a keynote by Brett Hoogeveen and offered certification credits to support networking.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bromley’s Books is marking its first anniversary this Saturday during Indie Bookstore Day with book giveaways and a hidden golden ticket for a year of free audiobooks at its brick-and-mortar store in Marquette. Owner Chelsea Bromley plans to bring the book bus back + expand literacy events in the U.P.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan's tourism industry is preparing for a busy summer while local businesses face a staffing shortage, relying on roughly 5,000 temporary workers to support operations on Mackinac Island and other popular destinations (some firms are offering housing and technology solutions to attract help).  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU junior Taylor Zima received a merit scholarship presented by Chef de Gare Voiture 559 during a ceremony with NMU nursing faculty & Voyageur Militaire representative Charlie Hawes. The annual award from the Society of Forty Men & Eight Horses supports a deserving nursing student through a long-standing local partnership.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • This summer, the city began in-situ remediation on the former Cliffs-Dow site along Lakeshore Avenue using an EPA grant from 2023. The treatment, which captures contamination before it reaches Lake Superior, is expected to finish in late 2026.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette passed its 200th local law in January banning the transport of exotic animals for entertainment. Local activist Olivia Lubig helped push the ordinance to protect animal welfare and align with community values.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Negaunee won a softball doubleheader at Kingsford Wednesday with scores of 4-0 and 12-2. The team will play Gwinn at 4 p.m. today at Hurley Field (Marquette) and then travel to Manistique on Tuesday.  The Mining Journal
  • NMU's new head coach Keil Ganz has named Drew Blair and Luke Taylor as assistant coaches for the men’s basketball staff. Blair comes from Minnesota — Duluth where he helped win a conference championship, while Taylor joins from St. Cloud State, with both expected to boost team success this season.  The Mining Journal
  • Five local girls basketball players earned all state honors on the Free Press list compiled in March. Ishpeming’s Jenessa Eagle led Division 4’s First Team and Marquette freshman Avery Osborne received honorable mention in Division 1 while players from Baraga and Negaunee also received recognition.  The Mining Journal
