COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mickey Brumm of Marquette wore an orange vest Wednesday to join Go Orange Day (part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 20–24) that highlights the need for safe driving near highway work zones.  The Mining Journal
  • Celebrate Trails Day will take place Saturday with Rails to Trails Conservancy and the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Marquette to promote trail access and community stewardship after a slow spring. IOHT administrator Bob Hendrickson (along with RTC VP Brandi Horton) urged locals to learn about community trails.  The Mining Journal
  • U.P. Pink Power is hosting its annual 17-mile Fundraising Walk on Saturday, Apr. 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Knotty Pine in Arnold + the walk includes 38 pit stops, a lunch break, and ends at Up North Lodge to support local families.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Negaunee Elks Lodge donated $4,275 to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans on April 16 for physical therapy equipment, with funds raised from pasty sales. Around 15 lodge volunteers bake pasties monthly for community programs (supporting local veterans' care).  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting June 13, the Pine Mountain Music Festival will host its Summer Concert Series in several U.P. venues, including Marquette, Iron Mountain, Houghton & Ontonagon, featuring performances by A Little Light Music, The Bergonzi Trio, and UPstarts artists.   • Northern Michigan University piano students will perform a concert of their favorite pieces today in Reynolds Recital Hall from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. No tickets are needed and visitors may attend part or all of the recital.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University President Dr. Chris Olsen recounted his first semester on the job on Wildcat Wednesday, April 22, as he detailed record-setting winter closings and enrollment challenges. The university will hold commencement at the Superior Dome at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 plus launch a fall fundraising campaign.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TV6 Investigates looked at the future of Essential Air Service (EAS) as Marquette Sawyer recorded 116,000 passengers in 2025 and other local airports saw growth, while proposed federal cuts for FY2027 may reduce funding for air travel.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The 906 Chapter of State Employee Retirees Association will meet at UP North in Gwinn at noon on Monday, May 11, featuring Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Zach Holloway and attorney John Yonkers. Reservations (Edgar Sommers II, 906-250-5560, May 3) and $20 dues apply; board nominations (for three openings) are open.  The Mining Journal

  • Unused or expired medications can be returned at Michigan State Police posts during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Apr. 25 + if missed, drop-offs are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marquette Senior High School baseball swept Superior Central in a doubleheader on Monday with scores of 12 to 2 and 13 to 6, and the Sentinels will face Ironwood at 4 p.m. at home today + additional games against Westwood and Houghton are set for later this week.  The Mining Journal
