COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MARESA will host the Sharing Nature with Children event at Lakenenland Sculpture Park on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., where families can enjoy games, nature walks and seed planting while local groups offer resources and food with a request to bring a reusable water bottle.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Partridge Creek Farm in Ishpeming received a $100,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to expand its outdoor classroom and growing space. The nonprofit will use the funds in 2025 to improve drainage and add new fencing—efforts that will double its food production by summer.  The Mining Journal
  • Free summer tours of Eagle Mine facilities will be offered from June through September, with tours alternating between the mining site in Big Bay and Humboldt Mill in Champion on Thursdays from July through September. Registration is required for those 13 and older – bus transportation is provided for the Eagle Mine tour from the Information Center in Marquette while the Humboldt Mill tour is a walking tour starting at the Administration Building.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • NMU hosted a cannabis conference on Tuesday where students, industry leaders and researchers met to share updates on cannabis research and product testing—Brian Hanna said a new reference laboratory will help test product shelf-life and support investigations of illicit items.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Bromley’s Books will open its new shop at 813 on Third Street on Saturday—owner Chelsea Bromley said the cozy space will let readers enjoy a permanent spot while the book bus still roams Marquette County in the warmer months. The mobile bookstore, which began last September after many months of work, has built a loyal local following.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former poet laureate Kimberly Blaeser read poems Tuesday night at the Great Lakes Poetry Festival in Marquette, and the event will run daily until Sunday plus conclude with an afterglow program at Rippling River Resort.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Shiras Planetarium opened in 1965 with federal funds and local contributions that covered extra costs for a Spitz star projector, making it a landmark of education in Marquette. Today at 6:30 p.m., community members gather at the Marquette Regional History Center for a panel discussion celebrating 60 years of the planetarium’s legacy — with historic equipment on display through mid-May for a $5 suggested donation.  The Mining Journal

  • On April 17, NMU students showcased their research at the 29th annual Celebration of Student Scholarship in Jamrich Hall. Biology student Kaylee Fridstrom presented a poster detailing blood cell differences in burbot fish (a freshwater cod) while engaging peers and local guests.  The North Wind
  • MSU Extension has launched Gardening in Michigan, a page that offers articles, classes, and events on gardening for year-round support. Experts can answer questions by phone Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon eastern—providing help online via Ask Extension.  Upper Michigan's Source
