COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The U.P. Regional Labor Federation will honor fallen workers at Cliff Mine Museum on Apr. 28 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to mark the Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster anniversary, and speakers plus a clergyman will address how improved safety laws can help prevent future job site deaths.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tickets for Mariucci Family Beacon House’s Grill and Chill fundraiser are now on sale to help families with hospitalized loved ones, featuring food and music (singer Stephen Ray) on June 25 in Marquette.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Four Swords Retropub expanded its arcade with extra space, new games, and additional dining options. It is open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday next to HOTPlate Pottery and Clayworks.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local Episcopal churches will honor the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives by displaying red dresses throughout May, while UP Wild Church’s exhibit Remembering Our Fellows will be on view May 15-17 at 131 E. Ridge St. (public viewing is free).  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan dropped 15.4 cents per gallon over the past week to average $3.80 today - rates remain 67.7 cents above last year with a $1.55 range among stations.  The Mining Journal
  • Michigan Municipal League staff will visit Forsyth Township Monday, Ishpeming today, Gladstone Wednesday, Manistique Thursday, and Marquette Friday to expand their Local Economies initiative. The trip is supported by the Lake Superior Community Partnership’s Central Upper Peninsula Small Business Support Hub and will include downtown tours and meetings with local leaders.  The Mining Journal
  • Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! has been awarded a $215,607 grant and another grant of $65,879 to fund paid work experience for local youths aged 14-24 in partnership with area businesses. The program aims to boost the U.P.+ workforce by connecting job seekers with paid internships.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As spring melt raises water levels, the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) installed two new river gauges in Marquette County and is monitoring waters with emergency management and the National Weather Service. The partnership’s emergency response program is ready to assist affected wildlife habitats across the U.P. within 24 hours.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County Emergency Management and the Michigan State Police advise residents not to walk, swim or drive through floodwaters (six inches of moving water can knock a person down) and to follow safe pumping guidelines for basements. Residents are urged to avoid wet electrical equipment and move valuables to higher floors.  WZMQ 19
  • The Michigan Public Service Commission expanded the energy assistance program so that a family of four earning up to $70K a year now qualifies for help with heating fuels. The change raises the income cap from $48K and covers fuels such as propane and pellets.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • UP-based Connor Sports announced Monday morning that it is expanding its service to include projects for the Portland Fire, Golden State Valkyries, Los Angeles Sparks & Chicago Sky while continuing its work with the Las Vegas Aces, Atlanta Dream, Connecticut Sun & Dallas Wings in women's professional basketball.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The NMU women's golf team finished eighth in the eight-team field at the conference championship at Stonehedge Golf Club in Augusta over Saturday and Sunday. Abbie Pietila led the team with a 25th place finish during the three-round competition.  The Mining Journal
