COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A garage-sale-style event for moms will take place today at Father Marquette Catholic Academy from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—local parents will sell outgrown baby and children’s items to raise funds for pre-kindergarten equipment; admission is $2 at the door.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Family and friends gathered Thursday evening at Founder’s Landing Boardwalk in Marquette to throw flowers into Lake Superior as a tribute for missing NMU student Trenton Massey, who vanished in February and was last seen near the boardwalk.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette DDA is accepting entries for the Blueberry Festival poster contest until Friday, Apr. 24; artists may submit works in any medium (excluding AI) to win $400 cash plus a free vendor spot. Submissions are accepted digitally and in person per DDA guidelines.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • A John Prine tribute concert will benefit Kaufman Auditorium this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at 611 North Front Street. Organizer Brian Wallen says special guests will perform Prine’s classics and deep tracks — proceeds support local community arts programs.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Jamrich, students got tips for handling spring stress on Apr. 14 during WellBeing's Toolkit Tuesday, where they learned about campus tutoring + mental health support. They also heard about an upcoming Active Accountability session to ease exam pressure.  The North Wind

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NMU’s SHINE and GTU are hosting Earth Week events April 19th-24th with over 30 activities including a Run-for-the-Trees 5K and a Sew-Swap Fashion Show at Harden Hall, open to students and community members.  The North Wind
  • Flooding continues across the Upper Peninsula after heavy snowmelt and rain. In Marquette County, Negaunee began directing sewer overflow into a stream near Tracy Mine Road on April 16, and Gov. Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Menominee County while officials warn residents of dangerous conditions.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County declared a state of emergency Friday night for flood risks caused by melting snow plus expected rain this week, which will last for seven days. County emergency crews will watch roads and bridges while officials urge residents to stay informed and prepared.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Township has closed Harlow Lake Road due to flooding until further notice. The county road commission advises residents to call (906)486-4491 for more details.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • State representatives are planning a bill to let schools use up to 15 extra weather days after using their six snow days, covering Marquette and nine other counties. The move offers relief after a long winter.  Upper Michigan's Source

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition is underway at 401 W. Washington Street to clear a long-idle site for a new 16,000 sqft mixed-use building that will include two commercial spaces and 11 residential units (nine for workforce housing for those earning up to 120% of median income).  The Mining Journal

  • The Women’s Professional Billiards Association is holding its first U.S. Open pool Championship in Upper Michigan at the Island Resort and Casino (marking 50 years) with over 60 competitors battling for a $17,000 prize through Sunday.
