COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chocolay Lions Club will host its 23rd annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at Silver Creek Church in Harvey from 11 a.m. until noon—children of all ages will enjoy chocolate milk and snacks while searching for eggs that, if golden, can be exchanged for bigger prizes like bikes or gift baskets.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Community Action Alger Marquette will host its drive-thru Community Baby Shower on May 16 to help new mothers with babies six months or younger learn about available local services.   • Northern Michigan University’s service dog Welles received the 2025 Silver Tag Award on April 5 from the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter for his long service and caring presence on campus—he helps veteran Mike Rutledge with daily tasks and comforts students. CRIME NEWS

  • Brian Thomas Parsons was arraigned on felony embezzlement charges in the 96th District Court after an investigation found he stole several thousand dollars from the VFW Post 5760 in Gwinn—he was arrested on March 18 at his home in Marquette.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU hosted its Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship on Thursday in Marquette where over 300 students presented research projects that ranged from a portable bench cover designed to keep gym equipment bacteria-free to a sensor aimed at detecting brain cancer. Senior Teniola Ajayi—a biology major and young entrepreneur—and fellow students Bella Detinne and Zoe Moreno shared their work as faculty learned directly from the innovative projects.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette’s Department of Parks and Recreation is asking residents to drop off items—such as newspaper clippings of major events and letters from local schools—at the Parks and Recreation office before June 16 for review, as the items will be placed in a time capsule to be buried at Presque Isle Park.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System released its annual Community Benefit Report on April 17th, showing how it helped health care and boosted the local economy in the Upper Peninsula over 2024. UPHS Marquette CEO Tonya Darner discussed new services, updated facilities and her new dual role as CEO for Marquette and Bell hospitals—details that underline the system’s ongoing commitment to the region.  Sunny 101.9
  • Marquette’s Milestones and Mobility Loan Closet has collected donated wheelchairs, walkers, standers, adapted bikes, and more for two years to help people get adaptive equipment quickly.
