COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette County United Way invites community volunteers to its Community Impact Panel on Wednesday, April 29 where they will listen to proposals and decide funding for over 20 nonprofits; interested participants must sign up by Monday, April 20 (no prior experience is needed).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Women’s Center in Marquette is hosting community events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month including the Denim Day Awareness Walk on Friday, Apr. 17 from 4-6 p.m. and a Coffee Crawl fundraiser with NMU’s PR Student Society of America on Saturday, Apr. 18.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 25, the Marquette Powwow Committee will host its first Ziigwan Powwow at Harvey Ojibwa Casino Convention Center, with doors opening at 11 a.m. and Grand Entries at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The event features traditional dance, craft vendors, and a feast while seeking sponsors.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University Choirs, led by director Erin Colwitz, will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Thursday and Friday, offering students + staff a chance to network with top music professionals and gain industry insights.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Gwinn Area Community Schools cancelled 14 times due to heavy snow and sent a letter to lawmakers asking forgiveness for two extra days — Bark River-Harris Schools stayed within the limit and will finish on June 3, with Gwinn ending on June 9.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Homeowners face issues from the spring melt as flooding causes gurgling toilets and drainage problems, so experts advise clearing gutters & checking septic systems and home insurance. Upgrading or replacing older septic systems may help if problems persist.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During National Invasive Plant Pest and Disease Awareness Month the Department advises residents to clean gear — from boots to car tires — and limit firewood transport to stop invasive species spread, asking everyone to report sightings promptly to control new infestations.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Starting Monday, April 20, the City of Marquette will temporarily close the multi-use pathway along Lakeshore Boulevard between Wright and Hawley streets and the adjacent south parking lot for four days to support groundwater cleanup at the Cliffs’Dow site. Pedestrians can still use the path in the evenings while cleanup continues until Thursday, April 23.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kristen Karls is hosting Queer Yoga every Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. in April, May and June at Youth Volume's music studio at 1221 Division St., with classes welcoming all ages at a sliding scale fee of $10 to $18 and no pre-registration needed.  The Mining Journal
  • Marshfield Medical Center Pediatrician Dr. Joshua Dykla advised parents on TV6 Morning News on Tuesday to start daily allergy prevention with nasal sprays to reduce spring symptoms for children, especially those with asthma.  Upper Michigan's Source
