COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NMU’s Public Relations Student Society of America will host its eighth annual Coffee Crawl on Apr 18 to raise funds for the NMU Women’s Center. Participants will follow a self paced route through local cafés — tickets are available now with limited same day registrations.  The North Wind
  • Marquette residents can preview the upcoming Farmer’s Market at the Preview Market on Sat. Apr. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, offering an early look at vendors before the main market opens on May 16.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • U.P. Domino's Pizza stores are donating 20% of today's sales to help EMTs purchase Carter kits for emergencies involving autistic children. Local franchise owner Adam Lambert said the donation coincides with Tax Day & shows the community commitment.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Regional History Center will host Swimming Suffragettes: The Evolution and Revolution of Women’s Bathing Suits on Wednesday, April 22, featuring a vintage swim suit collection that connects Marquette’s storied swimming tradition & women’s rights history.  The Mining Journal
  • Norway boy Odin is in the semifinals of America’s Most Artistic Kid contest today; he may win $20,000 + a TV show appearance and a museum exhibit if he advances to the final round.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourteen Upper Michigan schools have been awarded $4M for the new MEERA program to teach middle school students manufacturing and engineering skills. Teachers will attend summer training and classes will start next school year to build local workforce.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan Pre-K For All Program now includes home-based childcare providers to offer more early education options for families in the U.P. It adds 75 summer spaces to help parents who work or travel long distances.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bailey Quinn and her partner reported flooding in their rental home's basement on Altamont Street and raised their concerns at a City Commission meeting. City Manager Karen Kovacs said the city cannot intervene in civil disputes with landlords.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette lifts its winter parking ban today, allowing street parking from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. after record snowfall delayed the change from the originally planned April 1 schedule.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Active Physical Therapy's LeAnn Makela appeared on Mark & Walt in the Morning on April 14 to share details about hypermobility including its symptoms and causes, and she explained how physical therapy can help manage the condition at her Marquette clinic.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU junior attacker Josie Lakosky was named IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week today after scoring 14 goals in two games over the weekend + setting new school records in goals and shots on goal.
