ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, four female passengers were injured when an Amish horse‑drawn buggy collided with a pickup truck on 18th Road near H.25 Road in Riverland — three remain hospitalized with two in critical condition — the Delta County Sheriff's Office reported.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Central U.P. Small Business Support Hub awarded $113,100 to 16 small businesses in its second grant cycle—bringing its total support to 42 businesses with $218,975 in funds as part of over $400,000 in planned direct grants. The next grant cycle will open May 30 and run through June 27 and a grant overview webinar is scheduled for April 16 at 10 a.m. ET.  Upper Michigan's Source

CRIME NEWS

  • Two individuals were arrested after a traffic stop near Ishpeming in connection with an April 13 Moorhead homicide—35-year-old Jerome Anthony Thomas III faces four charges including two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder while 32-year-old Abby Nicole Fredrickson is charged with aiding an offender.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Northern Michigan University is reviewing its DEI policies in response to federal orders while continuing to welcome students of every race and sexual orientation—only three minor changes are planned. President Brock Tessman said more updates will be recommended to the board in May—as he prepares to leave in July for a new job in Montana.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 36-foot steel-hulled sailboat called the Nord Hus docked in Marquette’s lower harbor yesterday as Captain Lonnie Dupre began his lifelong dream of an Arctic expedition from Grand Marais, Minnesota. The crew— including experienced polar specialist Eric Brossier—modified the boat over the past three years for a five- to six-month journey to support vital citizen science research on the rapidly warming Arctic.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • On Monday evening, the Michigan DNR hosted a Conversations and Coffee event at Ishpeming Township Hall where community members talked with Fisheries Division staff about planned fishing regulation changes for Lake Superior lake trout and burbot—feedback from the event will shape proposals submitted to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission in May.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gwinn’s Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is now an eligible employer under Michigan’s Nurse Loan Repayment Program, offering qualified nurses up to $300,000 tax free over as many as 10 years in exchange for a two-year work commitment; applications begin April 30 (center officials say the program aims to address the local nursing shortage).  Upper Michigan's Source
