COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Courage Incorporated will host its annual spring fundraiser next week at River Rock Lanes and Banquet Center in Ishpeming. The event runs Saturday, April 18 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm and tickets cost $15, with proceeds supporting outdoor excursions for people with varying abilities and veterans.  Sunny 101.9
  • Registration for the 31st annual Marquette County Community Baby Shower begins April 13; the event will be held May 15 for residents with infants younger than 6 months (call 906 228 6522 extension 253 to register).  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tonight, families and young cubs enjoyed the fourth annual Baby Bear at Ore Dock Brewing (a family hotspot) which offered free craft sodas, face painting, balloon animals and music by Papa Crow ahead of tomorrow’s Angry Bear festival restricted to adults.  WZMQ 19
  • Zero Degrees Art Gallery is hosting a retirement reception for legacy artist Bill Hamilton today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. His artwork will be on display through May at the downtown gallery.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The 3rd annual Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited U.P. Fly Fishing Film Festival takes place today at the Northern Center on the NMU campus from 4:30 to 9:00 pm, featuring regional films, a Cabin Fever Happy Hour until 6:00, + an After Party at Blackrocks Brewery on 3rd Street.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Marquette Symphony Orchestra will perform its final season concert today at 7:30 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium. The program features Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, the MSO Young Artist Winner, and a special showcase by saxophonist Nathan Salazar.  Sunny 101.9
  • Spring Street is closed until Sunday at 5 p.m. for the annual Festival of the Angry Bear (a local celebration) which kicks off today at 3 p.m. downtown and lasts until midnight. Ore Dock staff expect this to be the festival's biggest year.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Apr. 10, NMU hosted Women in Construction Day at the Jacobetti Complex where about 170 middle school students (from seven schools in Marquette and Alger counties) learned woodworking, masonry and engineering to explore skilled trades. The event aimed to encourage more women to enter construction careers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan Department of Education awarded $24 million in CTE grants to 56 school districts today to boost local manufacturing and health sciences programs and help keep students in the region. The grants, funded by the 61v CTE Expansion Grant, aim to expand career training opportunities.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Northern Michigan University men’s swimmer Leo Nolles was named a Riepma scholar by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Apr. 10 & earned a $5,000 scholarship for graduate school, recognizing his record in national competition and his local volunteer work.  The Mining Journal
  • Downwind Sports in Marquette is hosting a kids bike sale during April as it prepares for summer trail season and celebrates 50 years. Co-owner Bill Thompson said planned orders kept prices steady amid rising gas costs & the store aims to serve beginners and experienced riders alike.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette’s Ford Richardson earned a Division 1 basketball Honorable Mention from the Michigan Sports Writers organization this week + the senior, set to play football at Minnesota-Duluth this fall, helped lead his team to an 18-8 season against several downstate schools.  The Mining Journal
  • NMU lacrosse beat Davenport 21-4 today as junior Josie Lakosky tied school records with nine goals & 13 points and moved within two of the season goal record. The Wildcats will host Senior Day Sunday, April 12 at 12 p.m. as they honor three seniors and seek a GLIAC title.  WZMQ 19
