COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette Lions Club collects gently used eyeglasses and hearing aids all year through a donation bin at Trillium House and through local optometry offices. The club sorts the items once a year and sends them to an optometry school downstate that gives them to people in need — continuing its long-time effort to help others.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wilbur Design — Construct celebrated its 10-year milestone yesterday in Marquette with local community groups in attendance as owner Wilbur Jennings outlined plans to hire skilled carpenters and a new designer and expand services into nearby areas. CULTURE NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance is showing Jesus Christ Superstar with NMU seniors and juniors taking key roles in the production. The musical runs in two sets, with the first run going through Saturday and a second set from April 17 — 19.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU student organization LIVE@NMU is hosting its annual Art and Word Contest in Marquette where over 60 artists and writers submitted works on self-love and mental health; panels have already chosen favorites. The public can vote on Facebook until April 27+ each reaction counts as one vote.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Peter White Public Library in Marquette held an art exhibit Thursday evening featuring top high school artists from Marquette, Gwinn, Ishpeming, and Negaunee. Local art teachers built the event to bring students together—showing the community their creative talents.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Marquette robotics team, the Binary Crows, formed months ago and including eighth graders and homeschoolers, has qualified for a world competition in Houston that will begin on Wednesday + they will join other U.P. teams in the event. Team member Boyne Gregg said the team’s goal is to learn from other teams + Coach Sara Hagle said roles are available for those with artistic skills as they adjust their strategy.  Upper Michigan's Source
