- ➤ On Monday, Apr. 6, students learned beadwork history and technique from Peter Michael Shelafoe (Thunder Bird) at Jamrich as he explained the craft’s cultural roots. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lily Dixon, a Marquette Senior High graduate studying at Michigan State, is a finalist for the Truman Scholarship — a national award offering $30,000 for graduate studies — and she will learn the results later this month. The Mining Journal
- ➤ NMU Biology students prepared for the annual Blue Spotted Salamander Migration by training about 200 volunteers and launching a citizen science project with EarthRanger mobile technology, with the migration beginning early April at NMU. The North Wind

- ➤ Northern Michigan University held the NextCycle Workshop Thursday afternoon — a state event where recycling professionals discussed growth in food waste composting and battery disposal trends to boost the circular economy. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Citizens for a Safe & Clean Lake Superior expanded its Wetland Protection Cash Incentive program by offering $1,500 per easement to eligible landowners in Marquette County today. The program works with Superior Watershed Partnership (and Land Conservancy) to verify wetlands and draft conservation easements. The Mining Journal

- ➤ The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is running its Septic Replacement Loan Program to help homeowners replace systems; program manager Anne Mitchell said a replacement can cost up to $30,000 while the 10-year loan offers interest rates of 1% for lower income + 6% for higher income borrowers. - ➤ UP Health System Marquette offers the Intracept procedure, a minimally invasive nerve ablation treatment for lower back pain that worsens with bending or sitting. - ➤ Health care experts and local representatives met at a town hall in Marquette Township this evening to discuss challenges facing rural communities amid rising costs and limited access. - ➤ Demolition of the condemned former Northern Hydroponics building at 401 W. Washington began this week to clear the way for a multi-story redevelopment featuring 11 workforce housing units, retail space, and indoor parking downtown — backed by a state loan and grant. The Mining Journal

- ➤ NMU’s lacrosse star Josie Lakosky earned conference and national honors after scoring 11-point in a 16-7 win at the Superior Dome on Saturday. She will play in two final home games on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon against strong opponents. The Mining Journal
