CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ NMU Department of Theatre and Dance presents 9 to 5, a musical adaptation of the classic comedy film, on campus. The show begins today and will run through next week. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ Dr. James A. Strain - a first-cousin 10 times removed from Ben Franklin - performed My Cousin Ben at the Marquette Regional History Center to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. He designed the show as an accessible lesson in history for local residents. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Northern Michigan University standout Leo Nolles has been named a recipient of the GLIAC Pat Riepma Postgraduate Scholarship for the academic year 2025 to 26. The $5,000 award supports his graduate studies and honors his athletic achievements & community work in Marquette. WZMQ 19
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Flow Water Advocates is urging federal leaders to support clean water programs as the federal budget proposes nearly 90% cuts to funding that supports water infrastructure, including safe drinking water. Liz Kirkwood said the reductions could imperil public health and local economies relying on these funds. The Mining Journal

- ➤ At its April 8 meeting, the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved amendments to the Vault Marquette plan that add a work plan for a new Trestle Hotel on South Lakeshore Boulevard, change parking from an indoor 300-space facility to an 80-space outdoor lot, & drop planned residential units. - ➤ Michigan soldiers from two National Guard units returned home after year-long overseas deployments. About 100 soldiers finished a mission in Kosovo & 70 completed support in the Middle East, with families welcoming their return. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Studies reveal non-smokers can face lung cancer risks from radon + cooking fumes and secondhand smoke, with genetics also playing a role. Experts at HealthCare Cancer Institute plan to use artificial intelligence to uncover further genetic factors. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association spoke at the Ishpeming Carnegie Library to explain simple ways to reduce dementia risks through healthy habits and social activities. The association will also host a kickoff for its Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Apr. 28. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and Dr. Kirk Klemme of Aspirus Houghton Clinic explains that recovery starts with three steps — medical care, counseling and support groups. - ➤ Demolition begins this week at 401 W. Washington St. to clear the way for new apartments and business spaces downtown. The Marquette Land Bank Authority says state blight elimination funds will help prepare the site for a groundbreaking in about two months. Upper Michigan's Source
