  • Today, the Fedynskyj family will perform a donation-based concert for Yoopers for Ukraine at First Presbyterian Church on N. Front Street from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.—visitors arriving at 5:30 p.m. can enjoy a free soup dinner, and the group will perform in Hancock on April 10 at 6:00 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County’s Sunny 101.9 WKQS was named Station of the Year in Commercial Radio Market 4 at Saturday night’s Michigan Broadcast Excellence Awards—its team also won awards for Breaking News Story, Play-by-Play Sports and Best Commercial, showing its strong role in our community.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Travel Marquette moved its office to 201 South Front St in downtown Marquette to offer visitor information and plan local events, said CEO Susan Estler. The non-profit aims to boost sustainable growth in the area (its previous office was nearby).  WZMQ 19
  • Starting April 14, the United Way of Marquette County will hide 12 eggs across Marquette in the 10th annual city-wide egg hunt—clues will be posted on its Facebook page daily until all eggs are found and winners receive prize baskets donated by local businesses. On April 19, the United Way will host a Kids Easter Egg Hunt at Presque Isle beginning at 11:00 a.m.—over 5,000 eggs will be hidden for children to find.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This morning NMU President Dr. Brock Tessman announced he accepted the leadership role at Montana State University, where he previously worked, and his last day at NMU will be July 1. He said the move was difficult for his family but expressed confidence that NMU will continue to grow with its experienced leadership team.  The North Wind
  • NMU Theatre and Dance seniors will perform a free fundraiser at Blackrocks brewery on April 22nd at 9 p.m.—showing songs, monologues, and scenes—so they can raise funds for a summer showcase trip on Mackinaw Island and prepare to enter the industry after graduation.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The USDA Forest Service is preparing prescribed fire operations on the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests—7,042 acres on the Hiawatha East Zone, 3,248 acres on its West Zone, and 587 acres on Ottawa will be burned to remove hazardous vegetation and reduce wildfire risk.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette law enforcement explained how a protest with about 3,000 people downtown last Saturday was safely coordinated using permits and teamwork. Sheriff Greg Zyburt and Police Captain James Finkbeiner said permits let officials plan extra officers and set up barricades — a method that helped protect personal property and keep traffic moving.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Township’s Downtown Development Authority met Tuesday where Chair Robert Sved said the township may replace its 20 faded street name signs because they do not meet current state standards. The board will discuss the plan again at its next meeting to improve safety (estimated cost is $30–$50 per sign) (as the update will help emergency services locate addresses).  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Mitch Leckelt will retire June 1 after over 11 years as CEO at UP Health System — Bell and Tonya Darner will become the Market CEO for Marquette and Bell while Alyson Sundberg takes over as COO at Bell.
