CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A Holocaust remembrance service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 at St. Paul’s Church in Marquette, hosted by the Marquette Interfaith Forum and Temple Beth Sholom. Annette Gendler, author of Natalie and the Nazi Soldiers, will speak with choral presentations and a free dessert reception (no charge). The Mining Journal
- ➤ The 3rd annual U.P. Fly Fishing Film Festival is set to take place this weekend in Marquette — featuring a showcase of films focused on local fly fishing stories and techniques. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Local families will celebrate Michigan’s oldest agricultural activity at the Annual Michigan Maple Syrup Weekend from April 11-12 in the U.P. The event offers tree tapping demos, tours and maple treat samples at select local farms in Rudyard, Escanaba and Pickford. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Olympian Nick Baumgartner visited Bothwell Middle School on Tuesday to encourage students to aim high, and he will speak today at 7 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium to share more of his Olympic journey. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette Regional History Center hosts My Amazing Cousin Ben at 6:30 p.m. tonight, where historian James A. Strain (a distant Benjamin Franklin relative) will share intriguing facts, replica flags, and maps about the founding father's legacy. Attendees can contribute a $5 suggested donation. - ➤ Today, new fishing rules start in Michigan with limits on lake trout at Stannard Rock and Big Reef and updated measures for burbot and walleye (1.2 million licenses were sold in 2025) as lawmakers consider raising fees. The Mining Journal

- ➤ The Vault Project will now focus on updating the Trestle Hotel instead of renovating the old Savings Bank Building after the City Planning Commission confirmed the change. The project’s site plan must be amended and approved before work starts downtown. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The Mackinac Bridge closed 12 times this winter because falling ice created hazardous conditions, exceeding the average of one closure per year over the last 30 years and delaying travel for commuters in Mackinaw City + St. Ignace; no injuries have been reported. Upper Michigan's Source
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On April 7, 2026, UPHP informed residents that April is STI Awareness Month with a focus on preventing infections by encouraging quick, confidential testing at local clinics and doctors’ offices. Kristin Williams stressed that getting tested helps build a healthier community. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ Residents can now use an at-home colon cancer test that requires only a stool sample and quick mailing, and Professor Mark Fendrick of U+M Health says the method is gaining popularity due to its simplicity; those with a positive result should schedule a follow-up colonoscopy.
