COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rotary Club of Marquette will host its 33rd annual golf outing on Thursday, May 28 at the Heritage Course at the Marquette Golf Club to raise $25,000 for local groups & Olympian Nick Baumgartner will share his inspiring journey at the awards banquet.  The Mining Journal
  • The Negaunee VFW 3165 Auxiliary will host a spring craft show and soup luncheon Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Negaunee Township Hall on M-35, with over 30 vendors + homemade soups and desserts available for free admission.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Upper Peninsula Arts and Culture Alliance has received two federal grants totaling $50,000 to fund mini-grant programs for nonprofits + a research study on how the arts boost local economic activity. Both awards require a 1:1 non-federal match, and further details will be announced soon.  The Mining Journal
  • Michigan State University Press published 'Wrecked: The Edmund Fitzgerald and the Sinking of the American Economy' ($29.95), a book that uncovers legal and economic insights into the famous Nov. 10, 1975 shipwreck; Thomas Nelson said the work also tells the unseen stories of families affected by the tragedy.  The Mining Journal

  • Keweenaw Peninsula will host the Michigan Sustainable Tourism Summit on May 20-23, where tourism, conservation, hospitality and community leaders will meet to share strategies for sustainable travel and protecting natural resources. Expert speakers and field experiences will highlight efforts to support responsible growth.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU named Keil Ganz as the new head coach for its men’s basketball team (the 16th in program history). The Wildcats stated that his introductory press conference will be scheduled soon in Marquette, and he brings years of experience from assistant coaching under former coach Matt Majkrzak.  The Mining Journal
  • On Friday, Apr. 5, NMU’s senior Beverly Harper won the 800-meter run at the Ashton May Invitational held at UW-La Crosse (in cold, rainy conditions) as her team earned several top-three finishes across track events; NMU will soon compete at UW-Oshkosh and in California.  The Mining Journal
