COMMUNITY NEWS

  • U.P. Pink Power will host its 17 mile fundraising walk on Saturday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. — it will begin at Knotty Pine in Arnold and end later with a celebration at the Up North Lodge Event Center. The event raises funds and awareness to support local families in need.  Sunny 101.9
  • Marquette County offers many volunteer opportunities during Global Volunteer Month through Yoopers United. Events include a Rotary Club roadside cleanup and Habitat for Humanity projects in Harvey with a Women Build event planned for the last weekend of May.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Based in Sawyer, Superior Extrusion achieved a milestone on Jan. 19 by extruding over 600 million pounds of aluminum + expanding its workforce to 213 workers, and the company plans to celebrate with employees once weather improves.  The Mining Journal
  • Great Lakes Sound and Vibration has completed its expansion at its Calumet facility, adding 26,000 sqft plus planning to hire 32 new employees over the next five years. The move, supported by a 2025 Michigan Strategic Fund grant, will boost US Navy-related projects and help grow local advanced manufacturing.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette native Gabe Thorburn (MSHS 2001, NMU 2009) worked as an associate editor on Netflix’s animated musical KPop Demon Hunters, which became the platform’s most viewed film last summer and swept all awards at the Annie Awards. The film’s success brings local pride in talent.  The Mining Journal
  • Festival of the Angry Bear hosted by Ore Dock Brewing Co will take place on April 11 on Spring St, closed for a spring celebration with vendor food + drinks that require wristbands, and a Baby Bear event with U.P. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Assistant professor Dr. Jongeun You from NMU released a case study that examines how Michigan uses AI through the Michigan Career Portal & a skills-first workforce strategy. The study projects up to $70 billion in economic impact and 130,000 jobs if the state leads in AI.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oscar G. Johnson VA is asking for volunteer drivers to help veterans in Marquette get to important medical appointments—volunteers receive a vehicle with paid gas and must pass drug tests and background checks.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services urges residents to get vaccinated against measles after several cases were reported statewide. The department (led by Joe Coyle) said vaccines help protect young children and others from a virus that can spread fast in the air.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Superior Health Foundation expanded its Rx Kids Program to assist expectant mothers and families across Upper Michigan, reaching ten new counties and offering a one-time $1500 payment plus $500 monthly for the first six months. The expansion was detailed during a Marquette broadcast on April 3.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northern Michigan Athletics named Keil Ganz as its new head men's basketball coach. Returning to Marquette (after a season as an assistant at UWGB), he will hold an introductory press conference soon.  WZMQ 19
  • UPSSA announced the Boys’ Basketball All-Stars for the 2025–26 season, awarding titles to Westwood’s Ethan Marta (Mr. Basketball) and others from Dollar Bay, Menominee, and Marquette with honors for teams and coaches. The selections set the stage for an exciting upcoming season.  WZMQ 19
