COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the 30th annual Upper Peninsula Boat, Sport and RV Show starts at 3 p.m. at Superior Dome in Marquette; the event runs until 8 p.m. today, will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and finish on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with general tickets at $6 — seniors and children are $5 and children under 6 enter free.  The Mining Journal
  • Courage Incorporated is hosting its annual community fundraiser on Saturday, April 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Upper Peninsula Brewing Company in Negaunee—proceeds will help fund free outdoor programs for people with different abilities and veterans.  Sunny 101.9
  • Habitat for Humanity is hosting its Home is the Key campaign at the ReStore on 133 Carmen Dr in Harvey so shoppers can round up their totals or donate extra dollars to help build affordable homes in the county; the campaign will run until April 30 + every purchase and donation will support safe homeownership.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Fashion Show will launch its third season on Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Ore Dock Brewing Company where models showcase local U.P. designs and part of the proceeds go to the Women’s Center—producer Pearl McConnell created the event to give local designers a chance to shine while a networking event and afterparty at DIGS follow the show with tickets at $25 for general seating and $40 for VIP.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Broadband company Highline will install 1,400 miles of fiber optic cable across the Upper Peninsula this summer, giving high-speed internet to 14,000 more residents at speeds 10 times faster than many have now. The company will focus on Marquette County and the eastern U.P. as part of a six-year plan funded by an FCC grant — more federal funding may boost rural service further.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Marquette City Commission work session on Wednesday, Base Hospitality Group proposed buying Lakeview Arena to turn it into a nonprofit entity — city officials made no final decision and said more public input meetings will be held.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planned Parenthood on Third St. in Marquette will close on April 30th, leaving gaps in reproductive health services like Pap smears, HPV vaccinations, and birth control care. Local providers such as OBGYN Associates (which is hiring new staff) and the County Health Department (offering appointment options with a sliding fee scale) are stepping in while Planned Parenthood will expand its Virtual Health Center to offer daily telehealth services.  Upper Michigan's Source
