COMMUNITY NEWS

  • College H.U.N.K.S. of Marquette is hosting its Community Cleanout Challenge in April to collect 10,000 lbs. of unwanted items and donate (75%) to help reduce landfill use; residents who mention the program when scheduling services will receive a discount.  WZMQ 19
  • Courage Incorporated will host its 4th annual fundraiser from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 at River Rock Lanes and Banquet Center in Ishpeming. Tickets are $15 per person (kids 6 and under free), and funds will support free outdoor adventures for disabled individuals, veterans and chronically ill.  The Mining Journal
  • Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a mobile food pantry drive-through at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey on Thursday, Apr. 9; distribution begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 11:30 a.m. or supplies run out, serving about 550 families.  The Mining Journal
  • Together With Veterans is hosting a resource fair at Campfire Coffee in Negaunee on the first Monday in April from 9 to 11 a.m. Veterans can enjoy free coffee and learn about local support services during the event.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Temple Beth Shalom held its Passover seder at NMU’s Northern Center, where community members learned about traditions, including eating matzos and placing an orange (a symbol of inclusion), as part of the holiday that began April 1 and continues until sundown April 9.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Building Trades Summer Camp accepting applications from students aged 14 to 17 will run in Marquette from July 6 to Aug. 5 with four-hour shifts paying $14/hour (financial literacy and resume training are included); apply by April 30 via Upper Peninsula Michigan Works website.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette-Alger RESA announced their Transition Work-Based Summer Program on Apr. 2 to benefit students through DNR, Job Link and Job Club programs. Organizations wanting to be involved can call Michelle Schwemin (906-458-0120, [email protected]).  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer declared an energy emergency Thursday, easing fuel blend restrictions to help lower gas prices by up to 20 cents per gallon in several counties. The order suspends seasonal fuel requirements starting May 1 amid global oil disruptions & could benefit drivers statewide.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette residents filing their state income tax returns are urged to file accurately before the April 15 deadline, as Treasury has processed over 3.3 million returns and issued more than $2 billion in refunds since the season began on Jan. 26 (Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale stated).  The Mining Journal

  • The Michigan Department of State declared April to be Donate Life Month to honor those who have given the gift of life through organ donation (encouraging local families to discuss donor plans).  Upper Michigan's Source
