  • Lawry's Pasty Shop is hosting a photo contest in Marquette where locals can snap a picture enjoying pasties at their favorite spots to win a gift basket, a $50 gift card + more than $100 in Yooper gifts. EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.P. Michigan Works! and the Carpenters and Millwrights Union will host the Hammer Time Boot Camp from June 16th to 20th at the Carpenters and Millwrights Training Center (Negaunee Township), where participants will learn jobsite orientation, carpentry basics and leadership skills to show their potential to local employers. Applications are accepted (open until April 30) for those looking to start new careers in carpentry.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Superior Watershed Partnership starts e-waste collections today where residents can drop off old TVs, monitors, keyboards, computers, and phones every Wednesday from noon until 4 p.m. at its climate office on Lakeshore Blvd in Lakeshore Park complex—kitchen appliances are not accepted.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDOT has scheduled 37 road projects for the U P. this summer to repair bridges, railroad crossings and add a new carpool lot. MDOT is investing about $5.2 million to resurface nearly 6 miles of US-41 in Marquette County — the resurfacing work is set to begin on May 15 if weather restrictions lift.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette’s city commission unanimously approved the Recreational Master Plan, a five year blueprint that is more than 400 pages long and outlines upgrades for parks and public spaces. City officials say the plan—developed with community input—directs projects such as improving Kid’s Cove at Lower Mattson Park, studying land use for the Jack Reynolds Athletic Complex, and expanding public lakeshore access.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Highline Internet is seeking a BEAD grant to boost fiber-optic internet in rural Marquette County — the company has connected over 5,000 residents since 2021 and will extend service to 7,000 to 10,000 homes if the state approves funding by the end of 2025 with funds used in 2026.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Michigan anesthesiologists are urging patients to disclose their cannabis and psilocybin mushroom use before surgery — these substances can affect anesthesia levels and raise the risk of heart and respiratory problems during procedures.  Upper Michigan's Source
