  • Six local thrift stores will host Spring Thrift Hop on April 10, offering discounts and a punch card contest that gives shoppers a chance to win prizes by visiting Habitat for Humanity Restore, Goodwill, Pak Ratz, Salvation Army, St. Vincent’s de Paul, and Silver Creek Thrift.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Room at the Inn will host an event to raise awareness about homelessness at Ore Dock Brewing Company on Saturday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m., featuring a panel discussion and live music by the Make-Believe Spurs and indie-rock group Willowby (from Houghton).  Sunny 101.9
  • The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will host its Superior Land Chapter Big Game Banquet at River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 11—proceeds will support elk habitats and big game conservation in Michigan.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Marquette Arts Writer of the Year B.G. Bradley released North Words: A Year in Poetry—a collection of 367 poems inspired by the U.P.—available now at Snowbound Books and Snyder’s Outlets.  The Mining Journal
  • Ore Dock Brewing Co. revives the Angry Bear Festival on April 11 after a 2025 pause for expansion — featuring six live bands, two DJ sets, 20 drinks, and six food trucks, with a free pre-sale on April 3 at 7 p.m. Spring Street will close April 10 for setup.  WZMQ 19

  • The U.P. Home Builders Association & Michigan Works will host a construction career open house on April 10 at the Michigan Works office in Marquette from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., connecting workers with over 260 local employers for on-site interviews.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • GasBuddy reports Michigan gasoline is averaging $3.93 per gallon today—a 3.6-cent increase over last week—with prices ranging from $3.09 to $5.44 across the state.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Negaunee stay active during spring break by attending fully booked sessions at Forest Flyers Ninja Academy that build focus and confidence. The Negaunee Public Library hosts an alphabet storytime and scavenger hunt from March 30 to April 2 to encourage learning.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Today, the U.P. Publishers and Authors Association announced the 9th Annual Dandelion Cottage Award winners for U.P. student short story writers in grades 5-12, with Leah Johnson and Genevieve Baker earning first-place honors in the senior and junior divisions. Winners’ stories will appear in the upcoming U.P. Reader + a Young Writers Storytelling Workshop is set for May 16 at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.  The Mining Journal

  • Superior Watershed Partnership is accepting applications for the Great Lakes Climate Corps Program which invites young adults to work on trail and coastal restoration projects across the U.P. Training begins in May (details are on the program's website).  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A blizzard earlier this month damaged Cinder Pond Marina and its lone gas dock, and city manager Karen Kovacs said the city is applying for a DNR waterways grant to rebuild the 31-year-old facility; the winter parking ban was also extended by 15 days to aid snow removal.  WZMQ 19
