BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cove, an eco-friendly boutique on Third Street, has outgrown its space and will move to a larger location next to Blackbird North in Marquette — the store will host its grand opening on Saturday, April 12 at 110 North Third Street.  Upper Michigan's Source

CRIME NEWS

  • At around 10:42 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a suite at the Upper Peninsula Medical Center at 1414 W. Fair Ave in Marquette for a report of an individual with a firearm—police found the person was verbally aggressive and resolved the incident before sending a report to the county prosecutor’s office.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Symphony Orchestra will perform its season finale Festive Folk at 7:30 p.m. on April 12 at Kaufman Auditorium, mixing classical works with Celtic music. The program will include Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony No. 2 by Tchaikovsky, and a collaboration with Celtic band The Knockabouts—promising a lively, unique show.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Marquette Mayor Jessica Hanley said the city will soon consider a plan to create a tax district for Able Medical Devices new facility so it can get a property tax break and create high-paying tech jobs. City officials expect the plan to bring 75 jobs + eventually hundreds and will hold a public hearing on Monday.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NMU is using nearly $27,000 from the Green Fund to fund five student-proposed sustainability projects on campus — including a composting service at apartments, a bike share program upgrade, and new pollinator habitats, bat boxes, and bird feeders.   • Dan Freeborn, UPPCO Manager of Communications and External Affairs, shared spring storm safety tips yesterday in Marquette—he advised residents to check generator safety, secure freezers, and follow proper procedures when dealing with downed power lines and trees.  Sunny 101.9
  • The DNR said turkey season starts April 19 in the U.P. Hunters can get a limited Unit M tag — only about 1,000 remain — while Hunt 0234 tags are available without application for hunting from May 3 to May 31 in the U.P. and northern Lower Peninsula.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Lake Superior Community Partnership hosted its first combined state of the city and county address on Friday morning at the Holiday Inn in Marquette. Mayor Jessica Hanley and County Board Chairman Joe Derocha answered community questions on projects (including downtown development, public transportation and housing) and discussed plans to make Sawyer International Airport self-sustaining.  WZMQ 19
