COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 31st Annual U.P. Boat, Sport and RV Show starts today (3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) at the Superior Dome and will feature 70 vendors offering outdoor gear and vehicles, with additional hours on Saturday and Sunday.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Partridge Creek Farm, with Marquette-Alger RESA and the MSU UP Research and Extension Center, has opened registration for the free 2026 Farm to School Institute—an event for educators and food advocates. It will be held May 19-20 in downtown Ishpeming at the Mather Inn and farm sites.  The Mining Journal
  • Peter White Public Library in Marquette is hosting Amnesty Month this April for returning lost and overdue items without penalty. The program aims to recover about 3,000 items—2 percent of the collection—and encourage more library use.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU Peak26 started Thursday morning at the Northern Center with sessions on entrepreneurship and innovation for students (and community members) as part of a collaboration between Innovate Marquette and SISU. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette Police extended the winter parking ban until Apr. 15 due to heavy snowfall, delaying the start of summer parking rules. The ban prohibits parking from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. citywide to give crews extra time for snow removal.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • SEMCO reported that scammers posing as company representatives have been going door to door & urging customers to keep their personal details private. Customers are advised to call the Michigan Public Service Commission at 800-292-9555 if they feel harassed.  The Mining Journal
  • Michigan taxpayers with household resources of $71,500 or less are urged to check their eligibility for the Homestead Property Tax Credit, which gives property tax relief to homeowners and renters in the area (credit may reduce taxes owed). Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale said the credit helped nearly 1.1 million claimants last filing season.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • MDHHS in Marquette released a new sickle cell disease plan for 2026 to 2030 that aims to reduce barriers, expand treatment, and strengthen public health surveillance; the plan (developed with community input) builds on a decade of work to improve care for about 4,000 Michigan residents.  The Mining Journal
  • NMU hosts its third Wellbeing Fair at the Northern Center Ballrooms to promote community wellbeing through eight dimensions including physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, financial, career and environmental health. The first 200 attendees receive a tote bag and can complete a wellbeing passport for a chance to win prizes.  Upper Michigan's Source
