COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Tim Hunt of Bayshore Veterinary Hospital returned from Alaska after judging the 2026 Iditarod Race — making him the first person to race, vet and judge the event; he flew by bush plane between remote checkpoints and plans to judge again next year.  The Mining Journal
  • A Marquette Senior High School student launched FindLocal906.com — a website that helps small businesses get noticed through community posts and town requests. Founder Antone Reinaas said the site will cover over 200 businesses and offer verification badges soon.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Easter Day, the Ishpeming Elks Lodge hosts its third annual community dinner in Ishpeming to help residents socialize — guests may dine in or take out and must reserve by April 2 at 3 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette's Blackrocks Brewery will host Spring Nature Trivia at 7 p.m. Monday, Mar. 30, where contestants can donate $5 to join and test their spring nature knowledge with MooseWood Nature Center as prizes are awarded to the top three finishers.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Found Space Theatre Company at NMU is holding a free staged reading of 'Find a T.V.' today at 7 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m. The performance reflects on 9/11 as staff and students work to start a healing process with support from NMU's Honors Program and Theatre Department.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Historical societies in Marquette County are digitizing documents and photos related to the Barnes-Hecker Mining Disaster to preserve local history. The next event is at Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library on Friday, Mar. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Semco Energy gave a $4,100 check to the Marquette YMCA to help finance a new boiler today as part of its Energy Waste Reduction Program - a plan that lets residents and businesses upgrade to energy-friendly equipment.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU is hosting UNITED 2026, a three-day free conference focused on rest and resilience with sessions covering healing practices and career tips for graduating students. The event continues today and Friday at the NMU Northern Center, and pre-registration is required either in-person or online.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Engadine Consolidated Schools and North Dickinson County School—both part of three UP schools among 17 receiving a portion of an $800,000 grant—will boost STEM programs by restarting greenhouses, expanding robotics and adding math and science support; North Dickinson is set to finish its greenhouse by this summer.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, blue-spotted salamander migration is on schedule at Presque Isle as experts say mild temperatures and snowmelt help them reach vernal pools for breeding. Residents can join NMU’s research project (using provided rulers to measure photos) while avoiding bright flash that may confuse the salamanders.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents toured the Negaunee Ice Arena this week and learned that a $1.25 million bond proposal (on ballot May 5) will fund repairs, including a new ice chiller and facility upgrades to keep the rink open next season.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • World Doula Week honors local doulas who support families before and after birth in Marquette. Doula educator (Lay Anderson) explains that these professionals reduce C-section risks and provide essential care, and the state offers certification grants.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Local baseball history traces roots back to the post-Civil War era when Upper Peninsula teams played simple bat-and-ball games that evolved into organized leagues.
