  • SAIL partnered with Travel Marquette to review over 100 local restaurants, recreation facilities, hotels and more for handicap accessibility, and new co-branded stickers will soon be added on doors—details like doorway measurements, parking spaces, ramps and elevators are in the updated Guide to Access.  WZMQ 19

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vickie Micheau—executive director of the Delta County Chamber of Commerce—has been elected President of the Board of Directors for the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, a role that will let her shape fair policies across the state. She will bring her years of experience managing the U.P. State Fair and serving on the state Fair Board of Managers to support fairs and festivals statewide.  WZMQ 19
  • Snowbound Books, a cherished downtown bookstore in Marquette, has stood for over 40 years and is now owned by Dana Welshans, who joined in 1998 and bought the store in 2013 when the previous owner retired—she offers a well-curated collection that reflects her passion for books.  WZMQ 19
  • The Trestle Cocktail Lounge, developed over 5 years, opened Friday in Marquette as a new venture by Ore Dock Brewing Company. It features a distillery for craft cocktails, a large beer garden with fire pits—custom seating—and a gaming area, and the top floor will offer affordable workforce housing with a tap room kitchen.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Marquette’s winter season ended strong as hotels reported normal bookings and events like ski races and hockey tournaments returned. Travel Marquette said good snowfall spurred local sports stores to boost sales in winter gear—helping revive tourism after past poor-snow winters.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beverly Reynolds — a Mid Peninsula second grade teacher — is one of three finalists for the Detroit Red Wings Best in Class Teacher of the Year after a routine eye exam in December 2023 revealed a benign tumor that was removed on June 24. She returned for the first day of school on August 26 and public voting on the award continues through April 4.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MSU Extension educator Anna Ellis explained that vernal pools are shallow bodies of water where salamanders lay eggs, as fish are not present— the Michigan Natural Features Inventory runs the Vernal Pool Patrol citizen science program offering training in Hessel on May 17 and in Marquette on May 18.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representatives from Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport and Lake Superior Community Partnership celebrated the expansion on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony—adding 65 new seats after shifting the security checkpoint for more space. Airport director Duane DuRay said the project cost about $400,000 and that upgrades to the air traffic control tower and boarding bridges will follow.  Upper Michigan's Source
