COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette County churches joined the clinic’s second diaper drive this month and nearly 30,000 diapers were donated to support the earn while you learn program—Hope Lutheran in Ishpeming Township and Sait Louis the King in Marquette were named winners of a contest offering a $250 prize—as 18 churches took part in the effort.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • At the Forest Flyers Ninja Academy in Negaunee, kids aged 3 to 17 began a spring break camp on Monday with obstacle challenges like swinging on shays and climbing warped walls + organizers say the program helps inspire active play. The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum remains open this week with interactive exhibits as parents are encouraged to limit screen time.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Peter White Public Library will host free events from March 24th to March 29th—featuring pet therapy reading sessions, a creative writing workshop, guided painting today, drop-in slime and I-Spy jar sessions, a nonfiction book group, a book release, a film screening with discussion, and a keynote on Indigenous history. All events are held in the library’s various rooms and require an adult for children under 8.  The Mining Journal
  • Since 1978, the Marquette Beautification & Restoration Committee has cared for local green spaces and in 2024 started an endowment fund to cover costs like flowers, soil supplements, and garden upkeep for summer 2025 events. The fund will support efforts including the City Wide Spring Clean Up and Petunia Pandemonium scheduled for June 6 and 7.  WZMQ 19

CRIME NEWS

  • The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded on Monday to reports at Red Lobster when employees said several patrons brought laminated fliers from MASA—Medical Transport Solutions offering a free meal, though the restaurant is not honoring the claim and officials continue investigating.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarah Smart—NSDAR chair for Good Citizens—gave high school senior Roenak Ghiardi the Good Citizen Award for his strong grades and school activities including his role as the Tin Man in a school play; Ghiardi will attend Duke University to study economics.  The Mining Journal
  • NMU Cosmetology is hosting its third Lucky You event on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Suite 1205 at the Northern Center; patrons can book a haircut, facial, scalp treatment, manicure or pedicure for a $35 donation while all proceeds are donated to the Marquette Women’s Center.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Peter White Public Library held its first Superiorland Pet Partners session on Monday when kids practiced reading skills with specially trained therapy dogs in the Youth Services Guest Room; the library will host the program every Monday until April 14 (4 to 5:30 p.m.).  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marquette County Board approved changes to its ORV rules to match state standards, allowing operators to use county roads to travel between trails and adjusting safety requirements for side-by-sides. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Errol Lukkarinen said riders with approved roll cages and seat belts may skip helmet and eye protection if their vehicle has a windshield — riders still must complete a safety course.  WZMQ 19
