COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local farmers in Chatham faced a heavy blizzard last weekend that brought excessive snow and buried fences. They managed animals by staging feed and moving piglets indoors (with extra straw) while preparing to protect crops and support the community.  The Mining Journal
  • U.P. Land Conservancy + NMU’s Center for Native American Studies held Sugar Bush Iskigamizigan at Vielmetti Peters Conservation Reserve, where guests snowshoe two miles to tap trees and engage in a Native American ceremony. The group will host a syrup boiling event at Whitman Wood’s Fire Site on Apr. 10.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Staff at UPAWS and Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti cared for animals and residents during the historic blizzard last week. They traveled through dangerous conditions, cleared over eight feet of snow from the facility and worked extra shifts to hold St. Patrick’s Day activities for veterans & animals.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee is closed indefinitely after snow buildup damaged its structure. Staff plan a temporary fix next week to remove artifacts safely while longer-term repairs are determined as the DNR manages the emergency response.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU and MSU professors explained how tillage helps aerate soil and manage weeds while challenging organic methods at Full Plate Farms in Skandia as part of the Climate at Noon series. The next event, Climate, Gender, and Community, is scheduled for Friday, April 17.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette’s Cinder Pond Marina season may be delayed due to ice and wind damage from March storms that damaged piers 2 and 3. Slip holders must renew their slips (by April 15) and will be refunded if the season remains closed.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU’s women’s lacrosse team beat the SVSU Cardinals 23-1 at home, led by Josie Lakosky who scored eight goals. The Wildcats dominated from the start and took a commanding lead while SVSU struggled with turnovers.  WZMQ 19
  • Hundreds attended the 42nd annual charity hockey game on Friday, Mar. 20 in Marquette as police and firefighters played against each other while raising funds for the Fire Relief Fund (which has provided $450K in aid) through extra features like a firefighter honor guard and shootout-style shots.  Upper Michigan's Source
