The AAUW Marquette branch will mark Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, March 25 with events at NMU’s Jamrich Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Ore Dock Brewing Company from 4 to 6 p.m.—aiming to raise awareness about a wage gap that leaves women earning just 83% of what men earn for full-time work.

On Thursday, the Kiwanis Club of Marquette honored Officer Nathan King (Officer of the Year) and Engineer Brandon Morey (Firefighter of the Year) for their dedicated service.

Next week, the club will honor Benjamin Bernard as Marquette Public Works Employee of the Year.

After being closed since September, Frosty Treats on Third St reopened Thursday and now serves pistachio yogurt and strawberry mango Dole whip in 30° weather—its hours are from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church was awarded a $135,000 matching grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places to repair its sandstone, apply water sealant, and restore its stained glass windows—part of its 150th anniversary project—and the congregation will start restoration work this summer while planning a concert on March 30 to raise $150,000 to match the grant.

Billerud will host its 11th Annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on April 10 at several sites including Escanaba, where young girls and non-binary individuals aged 13 to 19 will try hands-on engineering activities.

The event is organized with Womengineer and seeks to bring more diverse talent into the engineering field.

NMU Social Work Department celebrated 50 years of accreditation Thursday at the Landmark Inn as students, faculty and alumni gathered to honor its first accreditation in Michigan in 1974.

An open house is scheduled Friday from noon until 2 p.m. at 2400 Jamrich Hall to share more about the department's work.

Governor Whitmer announced on Thursday the appointment of Upper Peninsula residents Robert Mercure and Marius Grazulis from Marquette, Karen Kasper from Ishpeming, and James Paquette and Daniel Fountain from Negaunee to the Michigan Iron Industry Advisory Board while naming Monica Peach from Escanaba to the Hispanic Latino Commission; the appointments were effective March 20.

Marquette Police Patrolman Nathan King was named police officer of the year and Marquette City Fire Relief Engineer Brandon Morey was named firefighter of the year at a breakfast hosted by the Marquette Kiwanis Club on Thursday morning—both said the awards honor their hard work in keeping the community safe.
